I downloaded the latest Firefox update today. Before it installed, my computer crashed. After restarting my computer, Firefox will not fully load. I get only a grey screen and a search textbox. If I reinstall Firefox, will that help? And if so, will it retain my tabs and emails and email settings? Thanks. --elizabeth

Update: I reinstalled Firefox. It opens with all my previous tabs and bookmarks and menus, etc. However, there is no data in the main window. The name of the website shows up, but the website itself does not.

This is a common reason for Firefox to be useless from the address bar down:

Sometimes program installers and uninstallers mess with certain shared Microsoft files, and in particular, Firefox is very sensitive to a missing VCRUNTIME140_1.DLL file. Unfortunately, you do not always get a specific message about the problem.

To rule out that issue, you can (re)run Microsoft's installer for the VC Runtime files:

(A) Open https://docs.microsoft.com/en-US/cpp/windows/latest-supported-vc-redist?view=msvc-160#visual-studio-2015-2017-2019-and-2022

(B) In the "Visual Studio 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2022" section of the article, download the installer for your system:

  • 64-bit Windows: the "X64" download
  • 32-bit Windows: the "X86" download

(C) Run that installer and restart Windows.

Any improvement?

Thanks, jscher2000. No, that did not solve my problem. I did solve it, though. I had to copy the entries from my old profile into the new default profile Firefox created when I reinstalled it. Thanks for the info, just the same. --elizabeth
