Chosen solution

Hi, AliceWyman & Cor-el, I hope you see this because after all this time I can report problem solved once and for all. I've been busy the last couple of months and haven't had the time (or ambition) to work on it. However, about two weeks ago, a light bulb came on. I've spent the last week proving my solution because it has been so intermittent. It turns out we've been looking in the wrong place! It's a hardware problem not software. I don't know what gave me the idea, but running memtest 86 from a bootable cd revealed an intermittent memory stick error. I replaced the memory and haven't had a problem for a week. To be sure, I just put the old memory back and FireFox immediately crashed on start up. This has to be one for the books. You may want to pass this on to anybody who has an intermittent problem. There should be several passes made in memtest 86 to be sure of finding a possible problem.

Thanks for all your help.

I'm coming to that conclusion too. I just found out that xmarks no longer shows up in an extension search. I guess that means something. Unfortunately, I like having xmarks because I have a tendency to lose my bookmarks under certain conditions (backup and restore of my C: drive) and this solved my problem. I haven't found any equivalent way of doing it, so I may just put up with the crashes. I think as long as I know what the problem is, I can deal with it. It's the not knowing that was driving me crazy. If I find xmarks really is the problem, I may talk to them about the problem.

I'll post later if I come to a conclusion.

Thanks for all your help.

Well, I guess that settles that. Firefox just crashed with no extensions enabled. I do need to update my shockwave plug-in which I will do right now. More later.

Do you have a valid (not @EMPTY) crash report for that crash?

See:

Did you already update to the latest Flash 11.4 version?

Modified by cor-el

more options

cor-el, no I don't because there were so many I shut off crash report for a while. I've turned it back on. The latest Flash version I have is 11.3. I'll look into getting 11.4.

Thanks

You said before that you did an extensions search for Xmarks but couldn't find it. I found the add-on page here, in case it helps:

To upgrade Flash, see Flash Plugin - Keep it up to date and troubleshoot problems under Updating Flash. Adobe's 8/21/2012 - Flash Player 11.4 Release Announcement has more information.

HI, Alice, thanks, I found that too. They are now up to 4.1.2. The place I couldn't find it was in the add-ons in Firefox. If you do a search in add-ons manager, xmarks doesn't come up for some reason, at least not on my computer. An on line search does find it however.

Thanks again.

That is a problem with the SadJägerMonkey JIT compiler [@ js::mjit::EnterMethodJIT(JSContext*, js::StackFrame*, void*, JS::Value*, bool) ]

Do you have more crash IDs with that same signature?

The JIT compiler is disabled in Safe mode, so you can check if it helps if you run Firefox in Safe mode.

Modified by cor-el

more options

MozillaZine's Firefox crashes article says the following about crash reports with "EnterMethodJIT" in the signature, such as bp-89f5694d-658e-42bf-980f-906722120823

Firefox Safe Mode disables the JavaScript JIT compiler ("JaegerMonkey" in Firefox 4 or above). There have been crashes reported where the crash signature contains EnterMethodJIT . If Firefox does not crash in Firefox Safe Mode and if your crash reports contain such a crash signature in Firefox 4 or above, set the javascript.options.methodjit.* preferences to false in about:config

Hi,

I don't see any at a quick look. Of the 3 JIT opions, 2 (.chrome &.content) were true and _always was false. I set the trues to false and will see what happens.

I'm not going to spend too much more time on this because I'm not getting anything else done waiting for Firefox to crash. Like I said, sometimes it takes as much as a day 1/2 before it crashes again.

I'm also beginning to think that it's a process running in the background from another program that's conflicting with Firefox, so I'll keep eliminating some as I have time.

Thanks for all your help. I really appreciate it.

Good morning,

It's been an interesting weekend. It looks like I've avoided most of Hurricane Isaac except for a couple of squalls. Anyway, Firefox hasn't crashed since Friday when I changed the two JIT options to false. What exactly do these options do and can I get away with leaving them false? Will I lose anything?

I'm not marking this one solved, however, at least for a couple of more days to see if it continues to work.

Thanks again

OK, I take back what I just said. It just crashed again. Unfortunately it wasn't set to send a report. I had just rebooted my computer, and it crashed on start up. This has been my biggest problem. It can go days without crashing. I guess I'll just have to live with it.

Thanks all.

OK, another crash. I just updated to Firefox 15. Here's the report: bp-eebfdfd8-6262-438c-9fae-326ae2120829 I'm about ready to give up on Firefox and try some of the others.

The last crash report you listed at https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/eebfdfd8%2D6262%2D438c%2D9fae%2D326ae2120829 didn't include a related bug report.

I'm sorry but I really can't think or anything else to suggest, other than to work through the other suggestions here:

Try to boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that works.

Hi Alice, Sorry about not including the bug report. I've just about given up. I've got a feeling it's just something weird with this computer. Short of reinstalling the world, I'm not sure what to do. It hasn't crashed since that last post. I've tried something really off the wall, but I don't want to say what right now because it's too weird. I'll post back in a day or so if it works out. Thanks for your help.

more options

cor-el, I'd like to try that, but I can't tie up my computer in safe mode that long. It sometimes takes a couple of days between crashes. As I told Alice, I'm trying something weird and will let you know if it works out. Thanks for your help.

Hi, Back after a long weekend.

It was fine from early Friday morning until last night when it crashed again. I don't know but what I may have caused it because I think I tried to open it when there was a copy already open. Anyway, here's all the pertinent information just in case. Like I said I'm trying an off the wall fix and still haven't decided whether it's working or not. I'm going to give it a few more days.

I see you've re-enabled your extensions and hardware acceleration, which is fine since disabling them didn't seem to help much. In any case, your last crash report,

bp-baf328c8-8072-45b1-8e0e-77e5b2120903 Firefox 15.0 Crash Report [@ nsLayoutUtils::GetPopupFrameForEventCoordinates(nsPresContext*, nsEvent const*) ]

...wasn't that helpful and it didn't include a related bug report:

I read over your thread. Did you ever try cor-el's suggestion from two weeks ago, do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\) before reinstalling a fresh copy of Firefox. ?

more options

Hi Alice. Where do I find the bug report? I put in the crash report link and the troubleshooting info. Yes, I did a full reinstall. Like I said, I may have tripped the crash myself this time. I may have tried to open it twice and it didn't like it. That was the longest it ran without crashing. What I had done was using Partition Magic, I increased the size of my main partition by 2.5 GB. I had 2.5 GB of free space and this upped it to 5 GB. That seems to have helped, at least so far. I don't really think that was the problem, but I can hope. Thanks again.
