Firefox is blocking Java even though I had the updated version. Now I can't update or uninstall Java.

On 4/2/12 Firefox informed me that Java had serious issues with security and I should let them block it, so I did. Later I found I couldn't play Pogo anymore so I tried to enable Java but it still wouldn't work. My Java is up to date, 6.0.290.11. Now I cannot update Java, error 1606, nor can I uninstall Java from my computer, same error cannot access location, in order to re-install. Since I was using the most updated version, my Java should not have been blocked. Anyone else have this problem? I am stuck and can't update or re-install or anything.

Chosen solution

You actually have an out of data Java version. The latest is Java 6 update 31. so you were two versions behind on updates.

You can download Java from http://javadl.sun.com/webapps/download/AutoDL?BundleId=62313. Try installing this, and see if that helps!

You can also try to uninstall Java with JavaRa.

My mistake, I'll try your advice, thank you so much!

Thanks Cor-el, I tried JavaRa and though it said it found and removed many things, the Java program was still there and would not allow itself to be removed. Then I tried the link that Tyler provided and attempted to install Java but got the same message, error 1606 cannot access network. Anyone else have any other ideas? Oddly enough I still have Java when I use Internet Explorer.

Whew, lots of sweat and tears later, I followed the last 2 suggestions on this troubleshooting guide. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting%20plugins#w_manually-uninstalling-a-plugin

Java 6 is still in my programs and won't be uninstalled but now I was able to install Java 7 from Internet Explorer and it works in Firefox too.

I did not install latest Java because it forces Open Office, which gave me a problem with Microsoft office. Can I go aroud this?

more options

LMSilvian, no, Java doesn't force OpenOffice. It might suggest it, but you don't need to install it, and if you did install it accidentally, just go into your control panel and uninstall it, but it is really best to have the updated Java.

The last time I tried to install Java, did not give me a choice for open office, it started automatically. I had to hard shot down the computer to stop the program for installing. It is true that this happened more that a year ago. and I did not get an update since.

Thanks,

I have v7 update 7 installed about 2 minutes ago. It says it is enabled in my plug ins window, but facebook says it isn't enabled. When I try to update it, it says I need an updated version of java to run the F****ing plug in update. This is insane. I have uninstalled and reinstalled twice today. No java for me. Should I just switch to chrome and forget you?
