Why am I getting this code on various received messages?

More and more, this line of code appears, replacing all the text and graphics in Thunderbird emails:

"--_004_MN0P221MB0849EF3C2FEFDAD9D888F3AAA1DF9MN0P221MB0849NAMP_--"

I can still get the full text and graphics by going to my server, earthlink; but that is a cumbersome process. Has something in my settings been changed that caused this to happen? How do I take Thunderbird back to its normal functioning? Thanks,

Sometimes that may indicate a corrupted index. Highlight the inbox, rightclick and select properties and then select repair
