[Edited: Point (1) is now serious. Point (2) can be ignored. I have edited the question title to indicate that it still occurs in version 94.0.1. My latest post in this thread identifies another symptom of the update problem]

I have been automatically updated to 90.0.2 on several machines (most 64-bit Windows 7), but there appear to be problems with the latest version. I can't see evidence that these have already been reported.

1) Window update. When the browser window comes to the fore (top of the z-order), or when resurrecting from a minimized state, it does not redraw the whole window. Usually, half is missing. However, a cursor-move event while over the window triggers a redraw.

2) I have just experienced CAPTCHA issues trying to get into an gov.ie website. Instead of showing me text to enter into the field, it just showed a gray square. However ,the same challenge works OK in Chrome (i.e. it's not a problem with the site itself).

Are these known issues? Is there a way to regress to the previous version?

I haven't heard of this.

Start Firefox using Troubleshoot(Safe) Mode {web link}

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Troubleshoot(Safe) Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

2) I have just experienced CAPTCHA issues

Make sure you are not blocking content.

Many site issues can be caused by corrupt cookies or cache.

I can confirm that the window-update problem does not occur in safe mode.

Reproducing this is easy (for me): just minimize and restore the Firefox window a couple of times (usually only takes 1 or 2 goes), or do the same with another program so that it obscures the Firefox window (again, 1 or 2 goes needed).

I haven't retried the CAPTCHA problem because the gov.ie site is new, and not entirely working properly. It's also inconvenient to clear my cookies at the moment. [Edit: that site has now removed its CAPTCHA so it looks like it had a problem and it wasn't the fault of Firefox]

When someone comes to look at this, you may find that it doesn't happen on all machines. I have 3 Windows 7 64-bit machines here, all on the latest Firefox, but only one is showing this issue. It is very consistent, and somewhat annoying.

Please feel free to ask me for my settings, or anything else that will pin down the root cause.

Is there a way to save and restore profiles? I am testing some software at the moment and don't want to risk unexpected changes.

P.S. It still happens in 91.0

I created a new profile, called Test, and launched it in a separate browser session. The reported problem is identical in that session.

Sorry, been working hard and so not had time to try this. However, I have noticed some consistency:

Facebook does it a lot. Blogger's post summary page does it less often. Neocities dashboard rarely does it (had to minimize/restore window about 5 times to force it).

However, a simple page that I have under development, currently with just a div frame centered in the window, and displaying a single line of text, seems to do it every time.

Worse still, the suggestion that a mouse-move event over the body of the window causes it to redraw doesn't always work. Sometimes it causes a partial redraw and sometimes it takes a good few movements, but moving the mouse over the browser menus or tab controls always causes a successful redraw.

Not sure if this information is of any help.

I have had to switch my default browser as this has become quite serious for me. While trying to conduct transactions on secure pages then I found myself clicking on "ghost buttons": ones that aren't really there but it was not obvious that the page was only half updated. There was a very scary moment when I accidentally clicked on a real button that I absolutely did not want to click on.

As a note for anyone tasked with investigating this, I found that the problem has another very reproducible and annoying symptom: any tooltips (or "hover text") are never dismissed, leading to "ghost tooltips" hanging around until I can force an update.

I am now on 94.0.1 (64-bit) but there has been no change from when I first reported this issue.
