Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.

Safe makes no difference, in fact the restart in safe mode kicks off about a dozen popups.
Running Malwarebytes & AVG to no avail.
