I'm running Thunderbird version 52 and wish to upgrade to version 60. If I download version 60 and run the install, will it automatically remove version 52 and retain all my settings, accounts, profile and emails? If not, should I backup everything , uninstall the old version and then restore after installing the latest version?

You can install the downloaded version 60 over the existing version 52. It will upgrade your existing installation to version 60 and and retain your Thunderbird profile with all your settings, accounts, and emails.

Having said that, it's always a good idea to create a backup of the Thunderbird profile prior to an upgrade, just in case. https://support.mozilla.org/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data#w_backing-up-a-profile
