Why do messages downloaded to my desktop from my Internet server disappear and only placeholders show up in my Inbox?

Email messages appear on the server Website correctly and in full. However, when downloaded to my desktop, all address information (sender and receiver), subject, body of message, and attachments disappear. Only a "." appears in the message body and the date and time are shown by Thunderbird.

Right click the folder, select properties then the repair button... just to be sure the index in use is not corrupt.

Disable scanning of email n your anti virus and see if that has a positive effect. (anti virus programs do not scan web mail)

Thank you, Matt. Repairing the folder seems to have solved the problem. Did I cause the problem in the first place by inadvertently changing a setting? Knowing how it started would help me avoid a recurrence.

Watch for messages from your anti virus about infected emails and never allow it to fix issues it finds with emails. That is the usual cause and often ends in tears as the AV program deletes the entire folder of mail
