how do I stop all the message tabs from appearing across the top of my message window?

You mean they did this all by themselves? Or that you opened them in previous sessions and Thunderbird has politely restored them for you?

Right-click one of them and select "close other tabs". Then close that tab using its X and you'll be left with just the static Inbox tab.

You are expected to close tabs for yourself when you have finished with them.

If they are opening spontaneously then there is some deeper problem to look at.

of course your solution worked! Thunderbird, in my opinion, is so much better than Windows Live Mail, but I am still in the learning stage! I seem to have trouble understanding the suggestions in prior posts related to the problem I am trying to solve. thank you, again.

You do not have to open emails in a new tab, you can also open and read emails in the 'Message Pane' which should be below the email list. This only requires a single click on email in list.

If you cannot see the 'Message Pane': 'Menu icon' > 'Options' > 'Layout' > select 'Message Pane' or toggle the view using F8 key.
