I have the habbit of deleting my mails selectively from most-recent to earlier-in-time and if several sequential mails are to be deleted, things would speed up if I could make Thunderbird select the mail just above the one just deleted in stead of having to correct him by moving up the cursor. How can I make this setting?

tried reversing the sort order by clicking date to the latest mails are listed first. Then the move down makes sense as you are going on to older mails.

Sorting folders newest to oldest was perhaps the first change I made to Thunderbird when I installed it a long time ago.
