When deleting an e-mail selection moves to next and marks as read

In Thunderbird (Beta 50.0b3), when I delete an e-mail from my In-box it is duly deleted, and selection moves to the one below (as expected). But TB has also taken to marking this newly selected e-mail as read, which is not helpful. Normally just selecting an unread e-mail is not making it appear as read. It seems to happen only in the In-box, although I'd need to do more extensive tests to prove that. Is this an option I've inadvertently selected (if so how do I correct it?), or a bug? OS is Win 10.

re : when I delete an e-mail .......But TB has also taken to marking this newly selected e-mail as read,

If you have the 'Message Pane' enabled and any email is selected either by a single click or use of keyboard arrow to select or if an email is selected automatically after a delete, then that email which is selected in the list and therefore visible in the 'Message Pane' is an opened email.

If you have the option to mark opened emails automatically as read, then any opened unread email will be marked as read.

Thunderbird has not suddenly started doing this, it is the expected behaviour.

re :Normally just selecting an unread e-mail is not making it appear as read. If you normally do not have the 'Message Pane' enabled, then a single click on an email in the list will not open in the 'Message Pane', so as no email is opened then it will not be marked as read.

If you do use the 'Message Pane' and also want opened emails to be auto marked as read, but do not want unread emails to be auto opened after deleting another email, then there is an addon extension which disables the selection of the next message when deleting. 'Deselect on delete':

In order to install a downloaded extension, please do the following:

  1. Click the menu button New Fx Menu and choose Add-ons.
  2. Drag your downloaded XPI file to the Add-ons Manager tab and drop it.

or

  1. Click the menu button New Fx Menu and choose Add-ons.
  2. Click the gear icon at the top-right corner to the left of the search box and select Install Add-on From File…
  3. Locate the XPI file you downloaded and click Open.

You may need to restart Thunderbird when prompted. For more detailed instructions and information about installing add-ons, see Installing an Add-on in Thunderbird.

Thanks for your reply. I do not have the 'Message Pane' enabled.

Further testing has shown that the behaviour I've been seeing doesn't happen consistently. I shall have to devote more time to working out when it occurs, which will perhaps lead to why.
