A few days ago I sent an email. I verified that it appeared in my sent folder and it did. Now (a few days later) I checked my sent folder again and the mail I sent seems to have disappeared from it. Also my recipient probably never received the mail. There was no error message and sending/recieving mails generally works for my mail account. I have no problem with Thunderbird having a few bugs. But I need to be sure if an email is really sent. What methods other than checking my sent folder are there? Or is this clearly a bug in the mail server and Thunderbird doesn't have to anything with it?

Cc it to yourself when sending. This works best if you have a separate second account; some services (e.g. gmail) cancel copies back to yourself, on the argument that you have a copy in "Sent" so don't need a further copy.

If you get your own copy then you know Thunderbird (and the outgoing server - I mention this because Thunderbird isn't necessarily the only point of failure) did successfully send it. Consequently, failure to get to your correspondent suggests a black hole somewhere else; possibly your correspondent's email service refusing messages sent from your email service or ISP.
