Can anybody tell me why I have to restart my computer EVERYTIME it goes to sleep to get THUNDERBIRD to access my mail server? I've donated and I like the program very much and would recommend it but this is enough to make me look’ for ‘Thunderbird’ alternatives.

What version are you using? And when did the problem start?
I don't know how to find that but I think it is a beta version 102 on or about the 9th of June. The status usually just says "done" I can access the already down loaded emails to read them but clicking get messages produces nothing.
Do Help > Troubleshooting information. Version will be shown. ANd if it really is beta, Update Channel will show beta.
If it is beta 102 then you are drastically out of date. However, do you want to remain on beta?
I don't mind staying on Beta I've been on a few since I moved to Thunderbird from OUTLOOK which drove me mad.... The having to continually restart my computer thing is a PITA but I like some of the newer features ...this issue only started maybe a month a go. What should I do? Is there and update....I've looked everywhere on the "dashboard" that I can think of, compacted folders, emptied trash etc... etc... Generally I'm very happy with the program.
How do I update my beta or change to standard Thunderbird please..... this is driving me nuts
regards and thanks in anticipation
I can't see an answer to.

So perhaps step back to that point and answer the question. Without that information I would be inclined to say you need the latest version. But really it would be nice to know the issue is your installed version, instead of guessing.
1. Do Help > More Troubleshooting information. Version will be shown. ANd if it really is beta, Update Channel will show beta. If you really are on beta 102, then you could install the release version from https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/, and then on startup point to your beta profile data. But, there is no indication that your problem will go away with version 102.
2. after sleep, does it help to click the offline/online icon in the bottom left, twice, help with accessing the mail server?
