Use Imap.aol.com on 993 or pop.verizon.net or 995 and smtp.verizon.net on 465; normal password, SSL/TLS, User Name = email address.

Try this...I just had a similar problem in installing Tbird, and specifically a verizon.net email address on a machine that didn't have it:

Use this URL to get some more info: https://help.aol.com/articles/Create-and-manage-app-password

You have to log into mail.aol.com first.

Then you will need to 'generate' a new password for Thunderbird (or whatever other third-party app you are using) by following these steps - Not that while the AOL article above talks about this as being applicable if you have elected to use 2 factor authentication on AOL, IT WORKS WHETHER YOU NOT YOU ARE USING 2 FACTOR AUTHENTICATION):

1. Sign in and go to the AOL Account security page. 2. Click Generate app password or Manage app passwords. 3. Select your app from the drop down menu and click Generate. (They don't list Thunderbird, scroll down to "other" and then insert the name Thunderbird.) 4. Follow the instructions below the password. - Be sure to enter the password into your app without any spaces. 5. Click Done. 6. Use this app password and your email address to sign in to your email app.

Copy and paste that password into your account settings as you set up Thunderbird, incoming and outgoing (Thunderbird will ask the first time you try and send out an email) <<----THIS IS IMPORTANT TO USE THE GENERATED PASSWORD WHEN YOU TRY TO SEND A MESSAGE THRU THUNDERBIRD.

It's not a port problem...it's a password problem on AOL's end that you overcome by using the generated password for third party mail management apps.
