Hanging on checking password when trying to set up an account for a gmail address using thunderbird's defaults for the setup -- password is ok, can access the gmail account on-line. Previously have deleted the same account in an attempt to solve problem with hanging while trying to load messages -- this seems to have been related to deleting duplicated (somehow) entries from my personal address book. Have tried adding a different gmail account and this gives the same problem.

will monitor gmail on-line for any help

Using Nortons by any chance? When I set up an account on a machine with it installed exactly what you are talking about. I turned of SONAR to make it get out of the way if memory serves me correctly.
