After starting firefox, I cannot visit any website or see anything but a grey screen where the website should be.

I opened FireFox to browse the internet and after clicking on FireFox the brower screen split into 2 different screens for a period of about 5 seconds then went back to just 1 screen. After returning back to one screen the browser screen then turned grey. I cannot see anything except the buttons to minimize, maximize, or close FireFox. Cannot type in a website to visit or anything.

Close FIrefox then when opening (clicking) hold shift at the same time, then click reset firefox, you will need to reinstall addons.

Opening in the sidebar is the default for bookmarks that are created via a link or button on a website.
You can check the Properties of a bookmark via the right-click context menu in the sidebar (Ctrl+B; Command+B on Mac).
In the Bookmarks Manager (Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks) you can click the More button in the Details pane at the bottom right.
Make sure that "Load this bookmark in the sidebar" is not selected.

It is possible that your security software (firewall, anti-virus) blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.
