I had shortcuts to Volgistics and Facebook already on my desktop when I updated recently to Firefox 17. Since the update, those shortcuts direct those programs to Word 2007 which then opens the program into read-only in Word 2007. I can, however, connect with either program by ignoring the shortcut and manually typing in its url.

If you open internet files from within Firefox in an external program then those files are downloaded to the %temp% folder as read-only.
Read-only mode for such files is a safety precaution to avoid dataloss because it is not guaranteed that files in that folder stay if you close the application and return to Firefox.
If you want to edit such a file then you need to use Save As and save the file under a different name.

Thanks. Just did a full scan (instead of the daily quick scan) with Trend Micro and no virus issues or other problems shown. Problem remains unresolved.

Of the 4 shortcuts on the desktop, only Volgistics and Facebook are opening in read-only Word. I have deleted and reinstalled them both twice, to no avail.

Two of the four shortcuts on my desktop do NOT open in Word when selected. Those two shortcuts are for two different poker game websites.
