Why can;t I listen to a link on IE but not Mozilla?

Firefox is having problems with certain web sites

Description

I can click on Listen to Last Week's Sermon in Mozilla and I get a white screen. In IE and Chrome the screen is black and begins to play the sermon.

You have 2 versions of the Flash plug-in installed in Firefox (Shockwave Flash 5.0 r41 and the current version Shockwave Flash 10.0 r45). Look in Tools > Add-ons > Plugins.

Close Firefox (File > Exit). In Windows Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs, you will see "Abode Flash Player 10 Plugin" (this is for Firefox & other browsers) and "Adobe Flash Player 10 ActiveX" (this is for IE). If you see any "Adobe Flash Player ~~red:5 Plugin~~", click on that old version and click Remove.

Then start Firefox and check in Tools > Add-ons > Plugins to see if Shockwave Flash 5.0 r41 is gone. If it is still there, post back and I will give you other suggestions to locate the old plug-in on your system.


Other Issues: to correct security/stability issues

Update Shockwave for Director: your ver. 8.5 ~~red:(very old)~~; current ver. 11.5.7.609 (important security update released 2010-05-11; see http://www.adobe.com/support/security/bulletins/apsb10-12.html) NOTE: this is not the same as Shockwave Flash; this installs the Shockwave Player. Using Firefox, SAVE the installer to your hard drive (Desktop is a good place so you can find it). When the download is complete, exit Firefox (File > Exit), locate and double-click in the installer you just downloaded, let the install complete. IMPORTANT: I have found it wise to always restart your system after doing anything with Adobe products. See: Installing Shockwave

Attached is a Control Panel View of what Adobe is installed on my computer. In Tools/Addon/plugin I disabled a 5.0 version. It did not show up, however, in the Control Panel. Maybe you see something in the screenshot that will identify the problem.

Adobe Flash Problem After disabling the older Flash version: -did you restart Firefox (File > Restart Firefox)? -does Flash now work on the site where you experienced the problem?

To find the old Flash plug-in on your system, using Windows Search (probably too much detail, but here goes): -Close Firefox (File > Exit) -Start > Search > For Files or Folders > All Files and Folders -All or part of file name = NPSWF32.dll -Click on "More Advanced Options" and check "Search system folders", "Search hidden files and folders", and "Seach subfolders" -Click "Search" Wait for the Search to complete -Leave the Search Results window open until told to close it -Single click one of the files to highlight it, then Right-click on the highlighted item, choose Properties, click Version tab, scroll down and click "Product Version" -Repeat the step above until you find version 5.0.41.# -Note the "In Folder" path to that item -Close NPSWF32.dll Properties window -The last file you clicked on the Search Results window should still be highlighted and should be the old version -Do ONE of the following; your choice 1. Right-click the file and choose "Rename"; add -OLD to the end of the name and press the enter key 2. While the file is highlighted, press the Delete key and send it to your Recycle Bin -The plug-in could be in more than one location on your hard drive -Go back to "Single click one of the files to highlight it..." above and repeat for any remaining items on the Search Results window -When you have investigated all of the items on your "Search Results" window, Close the "Search Results" window

Start Firefox, go to Tools > Add-ons > Plugins. Is Shockwave Flash 5.0.41.# gone?

There is no NPSWF32.dll

when I click on Search.  Therefore I could not proceed

with your instructions.

There has to be at least one, because you have the current version installed. But then again, Windows Search is notorious for not finding files that are on your system.

I should have thought of this before. duh! Re-enable the old Flash plug-in. Then in a blank tab, type about:plugins in the address/URL bar and press the Enter key. You will get a list of your plugins. Look for Shockwave Flash, version 5.0.41.#. Just above the version, the path to the file will show. If you can not get to the path, it may be hidden; see: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Show_hidden_files_and_folders

Found the plug in (attached) but don't know how to get rid of it

Read my post just above your last post so that the full path shows in about:plugins. Navigate to it and delete it. If you can not get to the path see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Show_hidden_files_and_folders

Let me know if your problem is solved. Sorry about not thinking of this simpler solution earlier. It's been a very long day for me.

Making progress. Using the instructions for manually uninstalling a plugin. Got to setep 5 where it says "use windows explorer to navigate to the folder shown for the plug in you want to remove." That's where I got hung up. Where in Windows Explorer do I look to find:

  Application/X-shockwave-flash
  Application/futuresplash

If I can find this then I can proceed to step 6 to rename. We are getting closer. I will sign off for tonite and await some word tomorrow (Tuesday).830

See my last 2 posts. You will be navigating to a file and folder on your hard drive, like C:\windows\.......

You must do the following to find the path -reset the preference ~~red:plugin.expose_full_path~~ as detailed in http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+plugins#Manually_uninstalling_a_plugin -do the about:plugins as I detailed -look for Shockwave Flash 5.0.41.# -look for the path, in the about:plugins list that relates to the Flash 5.0.41.# plug-in, like C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins... -that path is what you navigate to in Windows Explorer or My Computer Look at the images in this article: http://kb.mozillazine.org/About:plugins

Such an old Flash version as Shockwave Flash 5.0 r41 is probably installed in the plugins folder in the Firefox program folder. C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins\NPSWF32.DLL (Windows may be hiding the file extension .DLL)

Yes, cor-el, that is what we are trying to determine. I am aware that in the past, some plug-ins had to be copied into the plug-ins folder within the Firefox program folder (especially Adobe products). Tomorrow, perhaps Merris and I will be able to make that determination.
