outgoing server lost

'"Sending of the message failed. The message could not be sent because the connection to Outgoing server (SMTP) smtp.charter.net was lost in the middle of the transaction. Try again. "

This is the error message I get for the last two weeks. Matt at Mozilla did not solve problem. Have rebooted system, unplugged everything several times still unable to send email.

Help.
