When I try to open a word document from a website via firefox it will not open. Constantly gives me an error message. Been in touch with microsoft word and its not an issue on their side.

I can open the documents via microsoft edge but not fire fox.

I keep getting the same error

hello dpetch17,

FireFox doesnt have the proprietary programming for Microsoft Office products as the Microsoft Edge Browser.

At best, FireFox will download the document then give you the option to save the file or open the file with Word.

On the other hand, if the document was a pdf or a word documented converted to pdf, then FireFox could open it.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration or userChrome.css is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Themes
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support to see if that has effect in case security software is causing problems.

I agree with dbben above. I don't recall seeing your exact error, but I have noticed that Edge and Firefox may respond differently to the same web page. While reading the Help manual for my bank's online guide, Edge will sometimes put a black "Click to Read" button over the page spread. Firefox doesn't do this.

Well, I logged into my old OneDrive and tested your issue with a docx and FF. I did had to do 2 refreshes on FF before the tool bar and then the document would fully load up.

You might want to try an experiment here:

Switch over to a different profile in FF and then retry the issue.

Go to the following url and you will find the options to use a different or new profile:
