I imported html bookmarks and got two entries for every bookmark

more options

To transfer my FF bookmarks to other devices, I export all bookmarks to .html then display the file onscreen, copy all to the clipboard, then paste them to a MS Word docx. I can copy that Word docx to other devices and search it when I need a bookmark. This helps me have access to the data without having to merge the bookmarks from two different sources. My machine crashed and I had to move backwards to a previous setpoint. When I realized I had lost some bookmarks by doing that, I knew I had a more recent .html of the bookmarks file. I first deleted all the bookmarks in the browser and then imported the more recent one. To my surprise, I now had a bookmark list that was completely doubled as if I had imported the reserve file on top of the existing one.

Does anyone have a routine or bookmark utility that will delete one of two exact duplicates in both the title and the underlying html link? Just hoping someone out there has already solved this problem. Thanks in advance.

When you import using an HTML file, that data is added to the current data. The old data is not removed first.

What you could do is to remove the bookmarks first and then import, but you would lose anything not in the imported file.

Do you still have JSON backups in the bookmarkbackups folder or is the previously used profile completely gone?

You can try to rename places.sqlite (placesOLD.sqlite) and favicons.sqlite (faviconsOLD.sqlite) and retry the import with a fresh places.sqlite database.

FredMcD, inadvertently, that what I probably did. I'll have to be more careful next time. Thanks for the info. Spazz9M9

cor-el, sadly, all those files are gone. I think I'm stuck with double entries for a while until I can remove all the duplicates manually. I've got about six years of bookmarks in there, over 3500, so it's going to take a while. The funky part is that it also doubled the upper level folders, so I have two folders named "Tools" and so on. Making sure to keep all my new bookmarks in the lower section of folders. Thanks for your reply. Spazz9M9

Does this backup already have the duplicated bookmarks?

If not then you can still try another import of the bookmarks HTML backup and this time use a fresh places.sqlite (i.e. rename/remove the current places.sqlite) like I wrote above in case you didn't understand what I meant.

cor-el, thanks for your response and please forgive my late reply. Sadly, when I do an export to html, I purge all the previous versions. So even the latest version already had the double entries. I think I'm stuck with the my "double trouble." It makes things kinda heavy, but luckily the "show all bookmarks" has the ability to get to the one I need pretty quickly. Thanks again for all your help. Be safe, Spazz9M9

There used to be add-ons that would check your bookmarks for problems.

Go to the Mozilla Add-ons Web Page {web Link} (There’s a lot of good stuff here) and search for what you want.

The Bookmark Dupes extension is what you need. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/bookmark-dupes/ "Display/Remove duplicate bookmarks, empty folders or descriptions"
