Order of bookmarks doesn't make sense when typing them in location bar.

I have several bookmarks that point to various pages on the same website (ebay for instance). I have the ebay homepage bookmark positioned above the rest of my ebay bookmarks in the Unsorted bookmarks list. When I go to type in ebay.com (trying to access the homepage), the homepage URL shows up at the bottom of the list instead of at the top. Why??? How can I get the location bar to show bookmarks in the order they appear in the list? I have moved them to the Bookmarks Menu and tried all the different sort options and it doesn't make any difference.

Hello Hi. See What I think is, the location bar shows the recently visited webpage of the site, say ebay. Delete all the history and try it again

So I noticed when I deleted the ebay homepage bookmark and recreated it it is now at the top of the list in the location bar! Apparently they are listed in the order they were created. But I want to be able to reorder them without having to delete/recreate all bookmarks in this manner. Is there a way to do this? I have tried the sort in the Library view but it doesn't seem to make any difference. Is there something I am missing that would allow me to do this?

The entries that you see in the location/address bar drop-down list are sorted by bonus points (frecency) that are added for various events like visiting a link.

So there isn't a manual way to order how these entries appear when typed? Again, I clear history each time FF closes so this probably affects how these algorithms work. I just want to have the list in the location bar mirror the order the bookmarks appear in my bookmarks folder when I begin typing a URL. There has to be a way to do this.

Nobody has any idea (or FF cannot do this) on how to organize bookmarks so that the way they appear in the bookmarks list (top to bottom) is the way they will appear in the location bar when they are typed in? If anyone has an answer either way it would be appreciated so I can stop beating this dead horse :)

You would have to open the bookmarks sidebar and use its search bar to influence how bookmarks show up in that list.

  • You can toggle the Bookmarks sidebar on/off via "View > Sidebar > Bookmarks" or "Ctrl+B" (Command+B on Mac)
  • You can toggle the History sidebar on/off via "View > Sidebar > History" or "Ctrl+H" (Command+H on Mac)

The Bookmarks and History buttons also have an item to open the sidebar. For the bookmarks you can find it in the list that opens if you click the button next to the star on the Navigation Toolbar.

Current Firefox releases have a "Show sidebars" button in the Customize palette.

  • "3-bar" Firefox menu button > Customize
  • View > Toolbars > Customize

Did you read the two hyperlinked support articles about frecency VisitBouns and attempt to understand how that works? There are 8 preferences that can be modified. Way beyond my comprehension, and when I want to load a bookmark I open the bookmarks sidebar from the keyboard rather than relying on Location Bar results.

Have you tried changing your Location Bar settings? Changing your location bar settings Like changing that setting to Bookmarks only, and see if that gets you what you want. No 'weight' placed upon "visits".

Thank you for the replies but I'm still stuck. So what I am noticing is in fact the list that is displayed whey typing 'ebay' in the location bar is inversely related to the position of the bookmark in the Bookmarks Menu, but it is directly related to when the bookmark was added/modified. So if I saved another ebay page for instance, it is shown at the bottom of my Bookmarks menu list but when 'ebay' is typed in to the location bar, this new entry shows at the top of all autocomplete listings of URLs with 'ebay' in them. So the location bar is displaying a list based on the bookmark's added/modified date. If I could only reverse that order that would be exactly what I am looking for :)

Told you. It's just the recently added shows up first. If I know the solution anytime, will let you know
