Although it didn't work as well as I'd hoped. There are some glitches and I have to re-arrange the UI every time I start Firefox.

I really hope Mozilla fixes this, add-ons and various modifications shouldn't really be needed.

Firefox 29 has the new Australis user interface, nothing to "fix" unless you use an add-on to make it look like previous versions.

You can check for problems caused by a corrupted localstore.rdf file.

You can check for problems with preferences.

Delete a possible user.js file and numbered prefs-##.js files and rename (or delete) the prefs.js file to reset all prefs to the default value including prefs set via user.js and prefs that are no longer supported in the current Firefox release.

THANK YOU! I don't know why anyone at Mozilla thinks Australis is an improvement but I've been battling with it for a week while my productivity sank. People with bad eyes NEED text instead of cutesy little icons and those tabs? I feel like strangling somebody... ARGH! With that add-on, it looks like things can finally get back to normal again and surprisingly, Firefox 29Beta has turned BACK in to Firefox 28 - which makes me question WHY anyone would want Australis in the first place? It doesn't work until you get rid of it.

Thanks, but I checked that first thing as someone else already mentioned it. It's not an issue of preferences not being saved as much as there AREN'T any preferences offered to fix the problems. No way to set the tabs back to the bottom, no way to get rid of the "tab" graphics that block needed identifiers, no way to have it show text instead of icons.

For the visually impaired, Australis itself is the problem. I'd compare it to trying to get a full day's work done on a kludged up cell phone browser.

Firefox with the Australis interface stores the toolbar customization in the browser.uiCustomization.state pref and no longer uses localstore.rdf exclusively.

cor-el, I fear you're missing the point. It doesn't matter where the interface stores things. What matters is that those of us with lousy eyesight find Australis very hard to read. That's the problem. To keep us using Firefox the developers need to continue to offer us maximum customization and that includes where we want the tabs located. Period.

I think that you both misunderstood my comment earlier. Firefox NEEDS to keep up with security issues, which is the only reason I'm trying to make this new messed up interface work. In order to get the necessary, I have to work around the sabotaged interface. Yes, the only way to make Ver. 29 work properly is to get rid of the ridiculous Australis changes, and it'd be nice if it HAD a way to do that built in instead of having to search all of creation for someone who knew how to fix it, but I'm grateful that someone figured it out and shared the method. A BIG thank you goes to Aris for designing an add-on to fix this mess but I'll reserve my comments about the Firefox team who keep deciding what "everybody" needs - to the shower room walls because it'll do just as much good.

This is so irritating! I deliberately use FF because I can't stand the way IE displays my bookmarks. Now, not only and I forced to put my tabs on top (just to make the UI friendly for touch screen users of which I am not one), my bookmarks open awkwardly. When will FF or any of these providers realize that changing things is counterproductive? I don't have all day to learn how to find my stuff and how to use the "new and improved". I have important things to do with my day and my life than to figure out where the heck something I used went to because it's deemed no longer useful for someone other than myself. What happened to MY needs? If you want to make things secure, that's great but why flip things around on me? And now you're telling me I have to install a third party plugin to make FF look the way I want? Why not come up with the third party plugin for those who want the IE look and leave the rest of us alone? I can't possibly be the only one who liked the way everything was laid out. I'm sick of the world changing everything for everyone on their stupid iphones. Some of us still use computers, and desktops at that. Unlike desinia, I will not reserve commments on the designers and changers of FF. I may as well go to IE now as FF is no different anymore. It's now just taking up room on my harddrive. So much for all the fanfare of how it's customizable. Sorry, but I don't pull my punches. It's now a piece of crap and after years of thumbing my nose at IE, I say goodbye forever to FF. What's the point of using it? And don't give me guff about third party plugins. If the UI is crap, and I can't navigate it, or stand to even look at it, it's of no use. With no difference in looks between it and IE, there is no use in using it.

I've been adding so many Additions just to be able to use FF the way I want to that I truly dread the mess that results when I get a new computer.

You should also be able to do this with code in userChrome.css by specifying a value for -moz-box-ordinal-group higher than the default 1, so the Tab bar is moved to a lower position than its current position in the DOM.

You would need more code to remove the rounded Australis styling for the tabs.

Add code to the userChrome.css file below the default @namespace line.

Hi jm67, what do you mean by "my bookmarks open awkwardly"? I'm not sure what has changed in this regard. There is a toolbar button for the bookmarks menu, and you can show the classic menu bar if you prefer that, and you can use the sidebar if you prefer that. It actually seems like one of the less changed areas. Could you describe what is missing for you?

Ok, jscher2000, my issue is not that anything is missing, but the manner in which the bookmarks open. Everyone has their preferences and mine is to have a bookmarks icon so that I can open up my list and go through my daily routine. I used to click on it and they would list along the side. Now, they open up in a long list and I have to scroll along (like IE), and go to each folder, let that open up into a list, until I find what I want. I have many many links all grouped into folders and such so this is irritating. I can click "view bookmarks sidebar". What irritates me is that I have to jump through hoops to get it working as I like. Apparently I am in the minority and have a large 1900x1200 screen at home and have real estate to spare so seeing my bookmarks is not an issue. I'm am not thrilled at having to jump through a hoop to get what I wanted. It's not an improvement. Yes, I know I'm venting my displeasure with a new UI that I'm sure most people like but again, it's sooooo close to IE now that I hardly see the reason to keep using it. I have three measly addons that I can live without. A switch to IE is very easy now. IE is hip, cool, safe and secure now so what's the FF lure? Oh, and making "bookmark this page" and my bookmark icon some weird sort of double icon is irritating too. Oh, did I mention I can't stand tabs on top? And I can't stand that they "fade". I can sometimes open a dozen tabs or more at once and for a reason. I need to flip back and forth between them and the fade treatment just makes it harder to see what I'm looking for. Man, I primarily used FF for years now for security reasons but this is really killing me. Too often things, not just browsers, get changed for the sake of change and because someone thinks it's cool but no matter how good the "guts" are, if the looks are unappealing, it's just not going to stand the test of time. Again, I realize I'm likely the dino in the minority here and the trend is minimalistic touch screen crazy programs and browsers but it's getting on my nerves that you can't give us dinos an option. The whole point behind FF was security and customization. Please let me move my tabs back down and not fade them, separate my fav from bookmark icon and open my bookmarks on the sidebar without me having to go through that extra click to get it. It should just happen. And remember, even Microsoft learned their lesson with Win8 and had to introduce the ability to go back to the traditional desktop. Not everyone loved or wanted the new snazzy touch screen look. They should have done that from day one but at least they realized sales were hurting because of it. If Microsoft can do this, so can FF.

You can look at the Classic Theme Restorer extension to have a toolbar button to open the bookmarks in the sidebar.

I know you're trying to help and that's great. But I saw this option. It's not a very good one. I shouldn't have to rely on third party tools to alter FF. I certainly wouldn't put in something that's brand new and with warnings, ("to avoid UI issues..."). It would have been better if you left the UI alone and gave those wanting the new and improved the option for an addon that gave it the look it has today. I'll wait and see if there's more pressure to revert but I doubt there will be. Likely the new FF UI is here to stay and our only hope is a new addon. Geesh.

Please allow tabs to be on the bottom and add more shadows to the tabs.... It's kinda hard to tell when the old tab ends and the new one starts...

The Firefox UI was just fine before you people got Google Chromy all of a sudden

I don't totally dislike this new UI.

But my hate is not having the choice of putting the tabs on the bottom. I personally hate them on the top.

Mozilla you have always given options for almost everything that you have developed in Firefox.

I like to have the Menu bar showing which I still do but with the tabs on the top its very very awkward indeed. I don't want to go to the classictheme, as I said I don't totally dislike the UI.

JUST PUT BACK THE OPOTION FOR POSITION FOR TABS

From what I can tell, it looks like your trying to give feedback on Australis. If you want to leave feedback for Firefox developers, go to the Help menu and select Submit Feedback.

That info gets collected at http://input.mozilla.org/, where a team of people read it and gather data about the most common issues. That data is then presented in the weekly Firefox delivery meeting.

Each of you can create your own question if you have any problems or issues with Firefox 29 by visiting /questions/new
