I run an eMac with 10.411. I just downloaded Firefox 3.6. I went to deltagate.dccc.edu and it told me to enable cookies and Javascript. Javascript is supposedly enabled, and I can confirm that the settings under Content enable Javascript. The problem is with enabling cookies. When I go to preferences/privacy and change the setting to use custom settings, I see that cookies will enabled with this setting. What do I need to do in order to get Firefox to retain this "use custom settings" preference? When I close the preferences window out and open it back up again to check, the setting has already defaulted back to "remember History". What steps do I need to take in order to save the "use custom settings" as a preference?

There is probably nothing wrong. That is the way that the privacy settings work.

Firefox shows the "(Never) Remember history" choice if all the history and cookie setting are the default.
Make at least one change to the default setting if you want "Use custom settings for history" to stay selected.
Otherwise Firefox will revert to "(Never) Remember history" if you return to the Privacy tab.
The choice "Use custom settings for history" will stay selected as long as not all settings are the default to make you aware that you made changes.

cor-el: I was having the same problem as the OP. I went into Options/Privacy and selected "Use custom settings for history" (just like I had done many times previously to no avail). This time, I changed the most innocuous setting I could think of, which was "Remember my browsing history for at least xx days" from the default of 90 to 103. Since then, Firefox has retained the custom settings. Thanks.
