I lost a sub dir in the bookmark

My bookmark is fine except for the "simcity" sub dir. That sub dir is just plain gone. The dir and all the entrys in that dir are also gone. I found the lost sub dir in an earlier saved *.json. Is there any way to add that sub dir from the earlier bookmark to the current bookmark?

The screenshots you posted are about visited websites and that is about keeping browsing history.

In case you use "Clear history when Firefox closes" or otherwise clear history.

  • do not clear the Browsing History
  • clearing "Site Preferences" clears exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, and software installation and exception for password and other website specific data
  • clearing "Cookies" will remove all selected cookies including cookies with an allow exception you may want to keep

Did you try to search for a bookmark that you know is in this lost folder as it is possible that you moved this folder to another position ?

The name of an automatically created JSON bookmarks backup in the bookmarkbackups folder includes a total item count (folders and separators included) and an hash value to prevent saving the same backup more than once.
You also see this count in the Restore menu drop-down list.

  • bookmarks-YYYY-MM-DD_<item count>_<hash>.jsonlz4
  • Bookmarks -> Show All Bookmarks -> Import & Backup -> Restore

Note that if you notice you lost bookmarks or accidentally deleted bookmark(s) and you haven't closed Firefox yet then try "Organize -> Undo" in the bookmarks manager (Bookmarks -> Show All Bookmarks) to undo this action and restore bookmark(s) you deleted accidentally or otherwise lost/misplaced.
You may have to use Undo more than once (Firefox keeps a full undo history for the current session).

Hi Steve, I'm a little puzzled about those three screenshots. ??

But focusing on the bookmarks question, there isn't a simple way to grab a subset of a JSON backup and put it back into your bookmarks.

How old is the backup? Would you want to replace your entire current bookmarks with the backup? That is the easiest but you might lose some things.

To do it the other way around, you could use a tool on my site to export the JSON to "bookmarks.html" file: https://www.jeffersonscher.com/ffu/bookbackreader.html

You can import that file -- which adds it to your bookmarks -- and then manually reorganize and clean up. Alternately, if there aren't that many bookmarks, you can open bookmarks.html as a web page and re-add the bookmarks manually using right-click > Bookmark This Link.

I have no idea how those 3 screen captures got here. Those screen capture's are from a completely different post on this forum. I know the post, I made that post. As for the post at hand. I know 1 way to re-integrate the SimCity folder, and all the url's. It is very time consuming . Enter each url by hand. I just had a brain storm. There is one other way. Save the url's in the SimCity folder that are in the old *.JSON file to a text file. Make a new SimCity folder in the current booknark. Then past and visit each URL in Firefox and bookmark each page. Then each url is integrated into the current bookmark.

Hi reble, here's another option. If you open all those pages in tabs in a new window, you can use the "Bookmark All Tabs" feature to bulk add them to your bookmarks in a new folder. That command is available using either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+D
  • right-click a tab > Select All Tabs, right-click again > Bookmark Tabs...
  • (menu bar) Bookmarks > Bookmark All Tabs...

If you have the URLs in a text file then you should be able to import this files as a bookmarks.html file (you may have to convert the links to <a href="" > tags). Once imported you can move these bookmarks to the appropriate folder.

I finely solved the problem. How it got that way is still a mystery. The sub dir called "SimCity" somehow got moved to an other dir. I went to the bookmark library. The search showed that the SimCity dir and all the URL's in there, where there. But the search didn't show what the new dir that the SimCity dir was in. I had to do a manual search of every dir and sub dir to find where the sub dir "SimCity" got moved to. It took 2 days to find the SimCity dir.

So, I was right in above reply ?

Note that it would have been easier to just click a bookmark in this folder to open this bookmark in a tab. Then you can click the blue highlighted star and check the location of the folder via the full tree list (second arrow on the folder line).

cor-el I have miss placed an other sub dir in the bookmark. I know it is in there somewhere. I am misplacing things, moving things around and forgetting where I put things do to medical problems and racking pain. I opened the U.S.P.S web page that is in the misplaced sub folder. And did it your way this time. It worked!!!!! Thanks  :-D
