I just discovered that pressing "k" in Thunderbird can cause an entire thread to disappear. I had accidentally pressed and it took me about half an hour to figure out what was going on as dozens of emails had simply gone missing. They showed up in the search but were no longer in the inbox. Even repairing the inbox and setting view-messages and view-threads to all (incl. show ignored threads) did not bring them back (which seems to be a major bug). I also find it mind-boggling that something as impactful as ignoring an entire thread which can result in dozens of emails to disappear without a trace can be activated by simply pressing "k", I mean WTF?!? Something like this should require at least a Ctrl-Shift combination to prevent accidental key presses. Also, why can't I disable these dangerous and non-sencical keyboard shortcuts. To be honest I find this incredibly amateurish, like a mistake a rookie programmer would do. Unbelievable that this crap is still present in version 60 something. I mean freeware is good and all but if it results in you loosing emails then it becomes kind of self-defeating.

BTW for all those running into the same kind of problem (and based on Google there are quite a few), the only way to get them messages back is to search for them and the copy them back into the inbox (although Inbox is shown as location). Well, what can I say ... excellent programming!

List of Keyboard shortcuts. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/keyboard-shortcuts

Newsgroups: Ignore or Unignore Subthread uses Shift + K Or if an email is selected and you use a command such as k: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/ignore-threads#w_ignore-a-thread

The emails have not been deleted, just hidden. You can tell you have an ignored thread/subthread as the thread column will display a red circle with red line through it. Further info in the link above tells you how to remove the ignore subthread/thread.

No this is not the case. Ignoring a thread can be reversed, see previous comment.
