This is for quite a long time. Symbols especially checks, "x"s and such are not displays. Instead, I get boxes with letters and numbers. (see image) I found an older post at

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1040170

with a couple of settings suggestions about "let the website use its own fonts" and to ensure gfx.downloadable_fonts.enabled is set to true. Both are correct and it makes no difference.

Anyone got an idea?

Hi siegbrunn, unless the icons are emoji's built-in to Firefox, most likely a downloadable font is still being blocked.

Since you already made sure your settings would not block it, could you try:

Double-check content blockers: Firefox's Tracking Protection feature and extensions that counter ads and tracking may break websites that weren't built to operate normally without the blocked components.

Do you see a shield icon toward the left end of the address bar, near the lock icon? More info on managing the Tracking Protection feature in this article: What happened to Tracking Protection?.

Extensions such as Adblock Plus, Blur, Disconnect, Ghostery, NoScript, Privacy Badger, uBlock Origin or uMatrix should provide toolbar buttons to manage blocked content in a page. There may or may not be a number on the icon indicating the number of blocked items; you may need to click the button to see what's going on and test whether you need to make an exception for this site.

Clear Cache: See: How to clear the Firefox cache. If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.

The missing icons are in the E000-E8FF (PUA) range that are used by a downloadable icon font.

You can check the Web Console (Tools -> Web Developer) for messages about blocked content and about the presence of mixed or unsafe content.

You can check the Network Monitor to see if content is blocked or otherwise fails to load.

If necessary use "Ctrl+F5" or "Ctrl+Shift+R" (Mac: Command+Shift+R) to reload the page and bypass the cache to generate a fresh log.

Make sure you allow pages to choose their own fonts.

Thank you for your replies @jscher2000 and @cor-el.

First jscher2000, the image sample I uploaded was on my Microsoft account page and no, the was no "shield to the left on the address bar, so I couldn't look at whether something was blocked.

@cor-el, I am no PC whiz (although I'm old enough to have started with WordPerfect on a blue background followed by Windows 311 and I used DOS a bit. But with Web Developer Console I'm out of my depth. BUT I tried it anyway on the above mentioned Microsoft account page (which is missing all buttons and with no "shield icon" in the address bar). Of course there was a forest of letters and numbers but on the chance that it might help I filtered to "font" and got 5 entries:

there also maybe 30 "Loading failed n" notices that all start with

Loading failed for the <script> with source “https://web.vortex.data.microsoft.com/collect/v1/asm.js?ver=%272.1%27&name=%27Ms.Webi.PageAction%27&time=%272018-10-06T12%3A. . . .

Additionally, I looked at the missing icons with "WhatFontOLI" extension and all but one was called "Membership Icons" The other was "SegoeUI" right at the bottom of the page. As it happens (and if it means anything) I have "SegoeUI" installed on my PC.

I also just checked Chrome to see if the problem shows up there as well. Doesn't seem to.

I hope this info is helpful. Thanks, Karen

Learning as I go. After reading what I could understand in the WebConsole Font entries, I went back to NoScript, removed permissions and then after refreshing, did them all again. And VOILA, the icons are there!

Now I'm going to keep an eye out for the next time this happens (elsewhere) and see if the Web Console tells anything I can understand.

Thank you for your time and interest. I'll cross my fingers!
