45.5.1 cannot writebnew messsages, cannot open contacts...
All of a sudden, clicking on Write new message, reply, forward etc is ignored by thunderbird (i.e. nothing happens). Found a solution in internet (starting bin safe mode and eliminating lightning ext): in safe mode, "write" etc are working. Getting back to regular (no safe mode) I get the same behavior. In addition, also clicking on "address book" nothing happens. I don't know what works and what doesn't,at the moment. If I close the application, it does not start again: i.e., clicking on it nothing happens. Accessing Task Manager, there is a process running (thunderbird 32 bit): if I delete that process, then I am able to start thunderbird again, but always without the possibility of writing, forwarding etc. Note that until a few hours ago everything was working fine. Any idea about what could have happened?

Are you actually using Lightning, or can you live without it?
I can live without lightning , in fact I removed it completely. The problem is still here. I downloaded and reinstalled 45.5.1, but nothing changed. I am beginning to worry a lot.
Thunderbird safe mode disables add-ons. What other add-ons (extensions) are installed?

OK, here I am. I started TB with all extensions enabled, and verified that indeed write new message, forward etc did NOT work. I disabled all extensions. All functions were back to normal. So, one or more of the extensions HAD to be responsible. Unfortunately, I enabled the extensions one at a time, verifying each time the functions: every time they worked normally, and even with all extensions enabled, they were still working. I can't say I am satisfied with this result, but now everything seems to work fine again. Thanks for your attention.
there are occasions where simply starting in safe mode appears to reset something and clear errors. unfortunately we can not work out what it is resetting
Maybe true but, as I said in previous posts, starting in safe mode had no effect. Here, I started in normal mode, and activated the add-ons one at a time,,, Anyhow, now it is working again: in case of other strangeness, I will be back. Thanks for your attention
