How do I "send" my emails instead of "Copying message to sent folder" continuously for hours?

I compose email, and select "send", but get no response except a screen saying "Copying message to sent folder" with animated bar that just keeps tracking across from left to right seemingly forever. It doesn't tell me if or when the email has been sent, but threatens to wipe it out if I try to move on to anything else, or close down. This keeps going all night if I let it.

It's likely that Thunderbird has sent your message when you see this. Try sending a test message to yourself to check that mail sending is working OK. Your Thunderbird is also set to save a copy of your sent mail, and that's not working for some reason. If you have IMAP it might be that Thunderbird can't access the Sent folder on the server, or your antivirus might be interfering ... there are many possible reasons. Do you actually need a copy of the mails you send? If so, try setting Thunderbird to save them in the 'Sent' folder of your Local Folders account. Then it only has to copy the message to a file on your computer.

Thunderbird needs to FIX this issue....it's been going on for far too long. Started for me 08/12/2016 and is still happening. Sent emails will not save a copy to my sent folder. And YES I have confirmed that all my settings are correct.

I have the same problem on random occasions, and on those occasions, Thunderbird freezes and whites out generally. I can't do anything at all until it decides to get back to work. I agree that this problem has been going on way too long. Way too many people are having various versions of it and there seems to be no satisfactory fix.

I am missing the sent folder altogether despite upgrading to current version of TB. How can I get a sent folder (and a draft folder) to appear?
