Why is the video from popular websites (eg Weather Channel) blocked on my Firefox?

more options

I recently downloaded Firefox on a PC, it was my default browser and everything was running fine. I added extensions including Ghostery and Add Block Plus which work fine on my other browsers and I think on Firefox for a while. Now I can't get the video to work on popular websites (e.g. the Weather Channel) even if I disable Ghostery and Add Block Plus which I don't think are the problem anyway. So I messed up something. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

A common cause of unresponsive script errors on sites using Flash is the protected mode feature of the Flash player plugin. That feature has security benefits, but seems to have serious compatibility issues on some systems. You can disable it using the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Plugins. On the right side, find "Shockwave Flash" and click the More link. Then uncheck the box for "Enable Adobe Flash protected mode" and try that for a day to see whether it helps.

The Cowboys site definitely uses Flash. Do you get the pre-roll commercial for Dallas or no video at all?

Issues have been previously linked to the McAfee Site Advisor extension. Try to disable it and see if the problem persists.

To disable it: Type "about:addons" in the Location bar Find the extension and click on its "Disable" button

If you still have a problem,

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?

I tried a random video on the Weather Channel site and it appears to use the Flash player (Shockwave Flash plugin).

Do you see the plugin notification icon in the address bar? I have attached a screenshot of mine, for example. If so, could you click and check whether Flash is allowed to run on the site or needs to be allowed.

more options

Yes I've tried disabling Add Blocker Plus and running in Safe Mode and the problem still is still there.

more options

yes I see the notification icon and I clicked continue allowing but no luck.

more options

I use the NoScript extension, so I had to allow a lot of sites to run scripts before the video would play (or should I say, before the pre-video ad would play). But eventually it did play. I don't use Ghostery or Adblock Plus.

Could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any improvement?

more options

Oh, you already tried Safe Mode. By any chance did you turn on this feature:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste track and pause while the list is filtered

(3) If the privacy.trackingprotection.enabled preference is bolded and "user set" to true, try double-clicking it to switch it back to false

If you changed that, does the change have any effect?

more options

I tried safe mode again, which I learned from you guys and will probably save headaches in the future, but no luck. The privacy.trackingprotection.enabled was not bolder and already set to false so I didn't mess with it.

more options

Does it work any better in a private window (Ctrl+Shift+p)? The main difference is that your old cookies and cached files won't be used.

more options

nope, man what's going on?

more options

I've run out of sensible explanations. Would you be interested in switching back from the beta to the release version? Here's how I suggest doing that:

Clean Reinstall

We use this name, but it's not about removing your settings, it's about making sure the program files are clean (no inconsistent, corrupted, or alien code files). As described below, this process does not disturb your existing settings. Do NOT uninstall Firefox, that's not needed.

(A) Download a fresh installer for Firefox 40.0.2 from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ to a convenient location. (Scroll down to your preferred language.)

(B) Exit out of Firefox (if applicable).

(C) Rename the program folder, either:

(64-bit Windows folder names)

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files (x86)\Fx41

(32-bit Windows folder names)

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files\Fx41

(D) Run the installer you downloaded in (A). It should automatically connect to your existing settings.

Success?

Note: Some plugins may exist only in that Fx41 folder. If something essential is missing, look in these folders:

  • \Fx41\Plugins
  • \Fx41\browser\plugins
more options

I've done everything you've instructed me to do and even went as far as a complete uninstall and reload. I have another site that's also not working http://www.dallascowboys.com/. Everything on these two sites is fine. It's only the video that is the problem. Now I'm getting this every minute or so with a different script location every time: A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, open the script in the debugger, or let the script continue.

Script: http://w.sharethis.com/button/buttons.js:1

Now I am starting from scratch or at least I don't think that there are any leftovers. Would you know were or how I could check for leftovers and any pointers on a clean new download?

Worked first time both sites! Thank you.
