When I click on a link and it opens a new window, the window is always minimized. I've tried to maximize the window, close it and open it and it doesn't work. It's very annoying.

I've tried to maximize the window, close it and open it and it doesn't work. It's very annoying. It doesn't happen if I just open a new window- that window opens maximized- it's only when I click on a link that opens a new window. Yes, I'm using the latest version. I'm using Windows 8, and no, I'm not changing to Windows 10- that is irrelevant.

Generally speaking, Windows applications remember the last size of a resizable window and use that same size over and over. To modify this, instead of maximizing the window, manually expand it by pulling on the resizing handles to make the window a more reasonable size. Then close the window (you can use the X button in the upper right corner). Firefox should record this size and use it the next time. Success?

Occasionally Firefox gets completely lost about window sizes due to corruption in a settings file, and in that case, you can rename the file to return Firefox to default sizes. Here's how:

Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table on the page, click the "Show Folder" button. This should launch a new window listing various files and folders in Windows Explorer.

Leaving that window open, switch back to Firefox and Exit, either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "power" button
  • (menu bar) File > Exit

Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then rename xulstore.json to something like xulstore.old. If you see a file named localstore.rdf, rename that one to localstore.old.

Start Firefox back up again. Do windows use more normal sizes?

That file also stores data on which toolbars are visible and hidden. To turn different bars back on, you can use one of these methods to show the toolbar list and select the desired bars there:

To turn on the Menu Bar, Bookmarks Toolbar, or other bars, click it on the list.

I did everything you wrote and it still opens minimized. For the record, I've also uninstalled and reinstalled firefox and I'm using the most up to date version.

Maybe try to set dom.disable_window_move_resize to true on the about:config page.

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

I tried that. Didn't work. It only happens when I click on a link and the link opens a new window. If I just open a new window from the toolbar, it's fine. It drives me crazy, I don't know why it won't open full screen.
