How do I stop Thunderbird from checking for attachments when sending email when I've unchecked the box to do so?
I sometimes can't send emails with no attachments because I get the pop-up box that says "checking for attachments". I've unchecked the box in settings so it should not check for attachments but the programs still tries to find an attachment. I then have to look for the word "Attach" in the body of the email and delete it, and sometimes this works so the email can be sent, but even that doesn't work sometimes. This has been happening for many months and I have the current version of Thunderbird - 31.5.0. Thank you!

Please save that email using file save as and forward as an attachment to the email address shown in my profile here https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/user/MattAuSupport so I can see what is in the message source that might cause this.

Hi. We noticed that the troubleshooting information was missing from these questions. In order to better investigate this issue, we may need to request a little more non-personal information.
Please add the troubleshooting information to your post as well as the results of the following troubleshooting steps:
- Finding the Troubleshooting information
- Does Thunderbird work in TB Safe mode (see Thunderbird Safe Mode)?
- What is the Thunderbird version?
- What operating system do you use (e.g. Windows 7)?
- Do you use anti-virus and firewall software? What is the version?
- Do you use Thunderbird add-ons?
- Who is the email provider?
- Who is the internet provider?
- What is the exact error message?
- What steps did you take right before this happened?
With this information we can better investigate and get a better idea of what may be causing the issue.
Please post back with this information and any other questions you might have.
Hi, here are my responses:
I haven't had a chance to try safe mode since I don't have any unsent messages to experiment with now.
Thunderbird version 31.5.0
I use Windows 7
I use MIcrosoft Essentials and Webroot for my virus software
I believe the error message is "checking for attachments"
The steps I took are to uncheck the box in settings that tells Thunderbird not to check for attachments.
I hope this helps, and thanks again.
My email provider is Comcast for one email account and GoDaddy for another
This didn't help a bit. Would you please submit the data I asked about.
I'm sorry, I thought I answered each of your questions. Maybe I missed something - what specific data are you looking for. Thank you.
First make sure you unchecked the box for this option.
From the menu bar select Tools-Options-Composition Check for Missing Attachments
You may need to restart Thunderbird to make this option take effect.
If still having problems take a look in the Config Editor to see if the option is set there.
Tools-Options-Advanced-General Select Config Editor and promise to be careful
Enter attach in the search box Look for a line Mail.Compose.Attachment.Reminder If changed from the default of True to False it should be bolded.
If still showing true, right click and select Toggle to change to False.
Restart Thunderbird

Airmail, thanks - the box was unchecked and the line under the config settings was bolded like you said it should be. I have restarted Thunderbird and the problem still persists.
Gnospen, my bad, I see now. The data is listed below:

What anti virus are you using?
The standard message for a missing attachment is That sounds nothing like what your saying. There is also a very passive bar that appears at the bottom of the typing area, which tells me when I type attach "found an attachment keyword: attach" and offers buttons to add an attachment or remind me latter.
However I know McAfee says something about searching for attachments, so what anti virus program?
Thanks Matt, I did get a box similar to like the one you show. I use Microsoft Essentials and Webroot, but don't think that's the problem since the issue is sporadic.
I think I'll try to trick the program by changing my settings back so the program will check for attachments, and then delete all of the keywords. Maybe this will work since nothing else seems to. Thanks!
PS - I tested several emails by sending messages with the words "attach, attached, attachments, etc." in the body and the program lets them go through without checking for attachments now that I've deleted the keywords (see my post just above). Therefore maybe this is a good work around when unchecking the "check for missing attachments" box doesn't work.
Are the messages all your own work, i.e. original messages, not replies or forwards? Im wondering if this "checking for attachments" message might mean it's looking for an attachment in the original message you're replying to or forwarding. Other peoples' signatures are a common source of such things.
Ti ṣàtúnṣe
Good point, I think it usually if not always occurs with a response or forward. I often have to change or delete the word "attach" from someone else's signature for it to go through.
For me, as of today, this box pops up when trying to send any emails, even with NO ATTACHMENT! Please recommend other email applications to try. Image below of "Adding attachment" box.
