Hello, yesterday I initiated the Reset Firefox process, but it went so slowly that it held up all my other applications. Finally I exed out of it, since there was no option to "cancel." This allowed other applications to function, but it corrupted my Firefox profile. I uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox, but now it won't open--I just get the error that my profile is missing or corrupted. What should I do?

Hi Fred, which thread in particular are you suggesting I look at?

There seems to be very little I can do if I can't even open Firefox to get to the profile manager.

Did you look thru the list on that web page? I forget how, but one of them will tell you how to start the profile manager. Create a new profile, then recreate what you had before.

Sounds that the profiles.ini file got corrupted and still links to the old profile that got moved to the "Old Firefox Data" folder on the desktop and you didn't finish to create a new profile.

  • Windows: %AppData%\Mozilla\Firefox\
    C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\

Note that the "AppData" folder in Windows Vista and later Window 7+ versions and the "Application Data" folder in XP/Win2K are hidden folders.

You can use one of these to make Firefox create/use a new default profile:

  • Delete the profiles.ini file to force Firefox to create a new default profile
  • Use the Profile Manager to create a new profile
