I get a black screen on every website where Flash player needs to run. Everything was working fine until I updated to Flash 18.****. I have tried all suggestions from various help sites including Mozilla, and still have this problem. Everything works fine with the new Flash Player in IE, just not Firefox. Disabled all protection software including firewall, still nothing. Re-Installed current Firefox and current Flash Player, still nothing. Ran various malware and antivirus software, no problems detected. I guess I'm stuck using IE until the problem is resolved or I can get some help. I just hate using IE or Chrome. Perhaps I'll give some of the other browsers like Avant or Opera a try until I can get this resolved.

Does the black box contain any error message?

Some problems with Flash video playback can be resolved by disabling hardware acceleration in your Flash Player settings. (See this article for more information on using the Flash plugin in Firefox).

To disable hardware acceleration in Flash Player:

  1. Go to this Adobe Flash Player Help page.
  2. Right-click on the Flash Player logo on that page.
  3. Click on Settings in the context menu. The Adobe Flash Player Settings screen will open.
  4. Click on the icon at the bottom-left of the Adobe Flash Player Settings window to open the Display panel.

The image "fpSettings1.PNG" does not exist.
  5. Remove the check mark from Enable hardware acceleration.
  6. Click Close to close the Adobe Flash Player Settings Window.
  7. Restart Firefox.

This Flash Player Help - Display Settings page has more information on Flash Player hardware acceleration, if you're interested.

Does this solve the problem? Let us know.

Black box does not contain any message on most websites visited, on some of the websites the cursor/mouse pointer will have the Win loading/working logo and/or the Flash player loading circle stuck at 0% will be there.

I have already tried the disabling hardware acceleration option with no effect at all, and I tried it once more per your suggestion, still no effect. I have also tried re-installing Flash Player 17, the one that was working, and some of the websites such as youtube work fine, except for the message stating that my flash player is out of date. Most other websites refuse to run flash 17, stating that an up to date version of Flash is required to view. But as I said, any attempt to run the current flash version results in a black screen.

I have also noticed that the firefox add-on section states that I have Flash version 18.0.0.160 which is out of date, but the most current version of Flash (18.0.0.194) and its files are all stated in the "more" and "options" section of the plugin. Also, when I click on the "update now" part of the plugin, firefox states that it has blocked this plugin because it is Flash 10 or older. Even though firefox itself states that the plugin is version 18. I also ran the Flash test webpage on Adobe and it also states that I am running the most current version 18.0.0.194.

Did you try to disable protected mode in the Flash player as well?

Yes, currently it is off (unchecked). I tried it with it enabled and disabled, in every instance with the attempts that I've stated above, with no apparent effect at all. Until I can resolve this problem, I have decided to leave it off.

In my case, the problem was AdBlock Plus. (It may have gotten corrupted somehow???)

When I completely REMOVED it - restarted FireFox - then reinstalled AdBlock Plus, the problem was fixed.

I found the problem by starting Firefox in safe mode (no add-ons enabled).

Hope this helps.
