I went to clear my recent history, but it will not do so. Then I went to Menu, Settings, Privacy and Security, Cookies and Site Data, Clear Data. No change. I tried do a Refresh installation. No change. I exported my bookmarks to my hard drive, and uninstalled Firefox. I downloaded a fresh install of Firefox, and installed it. ALL MY BOOKMARKS AND SETTINGS ARE STILL THERE!! Still won't allow me to clear History. Whatever happened, happened less than 24 hours ago, going by the websites showing in Recent History. Can you advise me?

Make sure you do not run Firefox in permanent Private Browsing mode (Always use Private Browsing mode; Never Remember History).

  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security
Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history"
  • remove checkmark: [ ] "Always use Private Browsing mode"

If you use Sync then best is to disconnect Sync temporarily during troubleshooting.

This can be caused by a problem with the places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite databases in the Firefox profile folder.

  • use "Verify Integrity" button on the "Help -> More Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page

If errors are reported with "Verify Integrity", close and restart Firefox or reboot and retry.

If "Verify Integrity" cannot repair places.sqlite, rename/remove all places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder with Firefox closed. Firefox will rebuild places.sqlite and restore the bookmarks from a recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

  • keep a backup copy of places.sqlite in case a new places.sqlite database has to be created

You lose the history when a new places.sqlite is created.

If you saved your bookmarks, in what format? HTML? If no,

Open the Bookmarks Manager; Press the Alt or F10 key to bring up the toolbar, and select Bookmarks. Hot key is <Control> (Mac=<Command>) <Shift> B. Firefox 84+ <Control> (Mac=<Command>) <Shift> O.

Once the window is open, at the top of the page, press the button labeled Import and Backup. Select Export Bookmarks To HTML, and follow the prompts and save it to a HTML file.

When you are ready to restore the file, Repeat the instructions above, BUT select Import Bookmarks From HTML.

The places.sqlite file contains the History and Bookmarks.

Type about:support<enter> in the address bar.

Under the page logo on the left side, you will see Application Basics. Under this find Profile Folder. To its right press the button Show Folder. This will open your file browser to the current Firefox profile. Now Close Firefox.

Windows: Show Folder; Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder

Linux: Under the page logo on the left side, you will see Application Basics. Under this find Profile Directory. To its right press the button Open Directory.

Locate the above file. Then rename or delete it. Restart Firefox.

I assume you meant the Verify Integrity button in Places Database? It's the only one I could see, so I used it. Yes, it seems to allow me to delete history now. Thanks!
