Hi, did you try zooming in or out: Ctrl and + or - key.

You can also set the number of tiles by: Type about:config into the address bar, press Enter, accept the warning, scroll down to browser.newtabpage.columns then right click > Modify, to change the number. You can do the same with browser.newtabpage.rows. You may then need to restart Firefox.

Also scroll down to browser.newtab.preload and double click to change Value from True to False.

First you're using an old version of Firefox. Firefox 38.0 was released on May 12th. 2nd, if you look at the "versions history" you'll see that New Tab Tools has been updated frequently over the last 10 months. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/new-tab-tools/versions/ Either update to Firefox 38.0.5 or install an older version of that extension.

Mozilla has updated Firefox and the new tab page frequently as of late, so the developer of New Tab Tools kept his extension current with new versions for every version of Firefox that has been released since like Firefox 31 to keep up with the changes in Firefox, based upon that version history.

Or do as Scribe mentioned, edit the prefs for rows and columns in about:config . Problem is that if you change the zoom level it may upset the rows and columns you set in about:config - and the zoom level won't hold for all new tab tabs that are opened, which the extension gets around - which is why I recommended it rather than explain how to edit the "advanced preferences" in via about:config.

zooming doesn't make it permanently, just temporary also I'll try this now and let you know

anyway what does newtab preload do?

also why doesn't firefox have a built in thing which lets us make the tabs have a desirable number? anywhere I can suggest it? or could someone do it for me please :)?

it worked but not correctly, It started the page with 15 boxes instead of 20, once I zoomed out there were 20, I want it to start with 20 always

Did you try to toggle browser.newtab.preload to false?

I think that preloading involves creating the new tab page in the background and zooming the about:newtab page only affects the current tab and not this copy in the background, so you get the unzoomed page if you reopen about:newtab.

If you want to always see 20 boxes, please install that extension and give it a try. From what I saw a few versions ago (like around Fx 35 or 36) inadvertently using 'zoom' or opening a 2nd new tab can changed the number of tiles shown when you set the 'rows & columns' in about:config . Using this extension overrides that action and "locks" the number of tiles.

Or get a higher restitution or larger monitor that will show more tiles due to it having more pixels "wide" and "high" than the monitor you are currently using.

Scribes solution helped right now, if I get some problems I'll install the extension

Normal updates do not change your settings. Sometimes if Firefox starts up slowly during an update you will get prompted to restore some default settings to speed it up. If you click that, you run a Refresh, and that will uncustomize your Firefox in many ways, so I suggest not clicking that button unless you have a more serious problem.
