Thunderbird is receiving and sending emails to all addresses EXCEPT emails to gmail addresses or yahoo addresses which often come right back with a "message delivery failure" report. I have updated just now to the latest version of Thunderbird. The problem still exists. I can receive emails sent from a person's gmail just fine.

To clarify the problem, tonight I tried about 5 emails to my personal gmail account from my thunderbird account which is through our website (hosted by GoDaddy and we get our email through them). Two emails went through to my gmail account. The other three came back to the thunderbird account on our desktop computer with the "message delivery failure " report.

I am totally flummoxed by the seemingly capricious nature of this problem. However, I would like to solve it quickly because I'm chief English tutor for our daughter and being able to send to gmail is crucial! Thanks for your help. cedarmountain

What is the cause of the message failure? This should be in failure report that you're getting.

If the cause is something to do with spam, then the problem is probably at the GoDaddy end, i.e. Google and Yahoo believe that the GoDaddy server is suspicious. Note that if your GoDaddy set up is like mine, GoDaddy will be sending your email through a number of servers, some of which may be regarded as okay and some of which look like they are regarded as suspicious. That's why some emails are delivered and some are not. You have no control over which servers are used to send your email.

Make sure that the SPF records for your web site are set up correctly - that's about the only thing that you have control over in this situation. GoDaddy should be able to help with that. You can check the SPF record that currently exists at https://www.kitterman.com/spf/validate.html

You can also ask GoDaddy to see if they can improve the reputation of their servers that are being used to send your email.

Thank you for your quick answer. Here is the message I get. I blocked out my gmail name for privacy. I will call GoDaddy support and get help pronto. Thanks again for your expertise and time.

I called GoDaddy. I sent them the failure message. After doing a thorough check of their systems, they said the problem is with Thunderbird and that I need to add Thunderbird's IP address so that it isn't getting confused. They said I could use Office 365's Outlook to avoid the issue. I do have Office 365 already paid for on my computer.

That's the standard response that you'll get from the first people that you talk to at GoDaddy. It's wrong, because that's not how the checks work. The checks are based on the server that sends the email, not your computer that sends the email.

For example, the GoDaddy server that sent the email that generated the error message you quoted above is p3plsmtpa08-06.prod.phx3.secureserver.net If you put that in a blacklist checker like https://mxtoolbox.com/blacklists.aspx you'll see that it's on one blacklist, so the chances are that it's been blacklisted by Google as well. There's nothing that you can do about this as you have no control over that server and the others that send your email. That's why it's a GoDaddy problem.

If you want to fight this, you'll need to get beyond the first level people.

What they mean is that you use an Office 365 email service that GoDaddy offers at an extra cost.

Have you checked the SPF record for your domain?

The IP address for p3plsmtpa08-06.prod.phx3.secureserver.net is 173.201.193.107 so it is numbers around that that should be in your SPF record.

I've pretty much told you all that I know based on my own experience with GoDaddy. I don't think that I'll be able to help any further. You may be able to get more help on the page included in the error message, i.e. https://support.google.com/mail/answer/81126#authentication
