Firefox very slow to open external links when Dashlane, Lastpass or eWallet extensions are installed

more options

There is quite a bit of discussion of this problem on the Dashlane support forum--when the dashlane extension is installed it takes a very long time (if ever) to open links in email messages or elsewhere. Other browsers have no such problem. I've discovered that the same thing happens if I try other password manages (Lastpass and eWallet), which suggests that the problem is with Firefox (or at least with something other than Dashlane). I've reset FF and uninstalled and re-installed and still have the same problem. It makes FF unusable as my primary browser. I'm using the latest version of FF on a 64-bit installation of Windows 7. And yes, I could use the firefox password system, but paid for Fastlane and want to use a browser that works with it.

Thanks, but I've already checked this and have done a reset and a fresh install. The problem appears as soon as I install one of the password managers, goes away when I uninstall them, and doesn't happen in IE or Chrome.

Would you provide links for those discussions at the Dashlane support fora?

I found one Bug report about Dashlane in Bugzilla.
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=901314
But it's not even remotely related to your problem, it's on Mac OS X.

If there is a problem with an add-on program (either a plugin or an extension for Firefox) Mozilla should be made aware of the issue through a Bugzilla report, by either Dashlane users or by Dashlane developers. Until that is done, all that is being discussed is conjecture or theory as to whose "fault" the problem is.

As far a LastPass is concerned, many Firefox users use LastPass and we have seen no postings here about severe slowness issues with Firefox. I don't recall eWallet being mentioned at all in this forum.

Thanks for the response, the-edmeister. Here are a couple of threads on similar problems:

I've logged the problem with Bugzilla.

That first thread has no response from a Dashlane support person.

Have you emailed Dashlane support as mentioned here - https://getsatisfaction.com/dashlane/topics/dashlane_plug_in_for_firefox_causing_noticeable_lag#reply_12633600 - to get their diagnostic report tool.

Hi David, is your problem only with external links and not with page-to-page navigation as described in the above threads?

Do these password managers share a common M.O. of installing in their own program folder and accessing their data from a central repository on the hard drive, rather than storing data in your Firefox profile folder or on the internet?

I have now reported the problem to Dashlane support and requested the diagnostic report tool. Thanks.

Yes, jscher2000, I am only having problem with external links and not page-to-page navigation. I'm not sure what the M.O. is of each of the programs. I think Lastpass and Dashlane passwords are stored online and unecrypted in the browser with a password that is not stored online. eWallet stores passwords of all types (not just passwords for access through a browser) on disk. The extensions facilitate saving new passwords and supplying passwords for browser access to sites.

Hi David, do you have Firefox in its default configuration where it opens an external link in a new tab in the last Firefox window you were using, or is it opening a new window for the link? Not sure whether this would make a difference, but to quickly switch between the two, check or uncheck the first box in the Tab options: Tab preferences and settings.

There actually is a hidden setting in the about:config preferences editor so you can have the two settings diverge if you like (e.g., you prefer tabbed browsing for links within Firefox, but want a new window for external links). This post has that spelled out if you need it for future reference: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/que.../971383#answer-479968.
