This site keeps sending me unnecessary emails, such as telling me when I have a private message. With most sites you can just turn off email notifications but there doesn't seem to be any way to do it here?

Thank you, edmeister.

I find the settings on that page confusing. I don't know what "watch" means. Is it some kind of slang for "Enable email notifications for"?

MartyJames, would you be so kind as to mark "the-edmeister's" post as Chosen Solution ?

("Solved the problem" button to the right of his post)

Thank you in advance !

As for the meaning of the word "watch": you could replace it with "read".

Thank you McCoy but I'm afraid I still don't have a solution as I don't mess with settings I don't understand, and I don't know what "watch" means in the context of these forums.

Can you please confirm the following is true?

"Watch" = "Subscribe and receive email notifications to"

Oh and while I'm here, it seems that threads are being automatically subscribed to. Is there a way to change this?

Under your original post (to the right), under "Question tools" you can click the button "Stop email updates".

But don't you want to know when someone has posted in your thread (or someone else's thread that you have posted in)  ?

Personally, I'm glad to get these email notifications - saves me a lot of time having to check the support forum, just to see if someone has posted in threads I am in ....

Yes, if you want to put it that way .....

I have all those boxes checked, because I want to get email notifications that will tell me that someone has posted something in one of the threads that I am in, or an article that I am interested in (or may be interested in).

I have already received quite a few email notifications that told me that a certain MartyJames has posted something - and that's how I got here, answering your question(s).

Thank you, that's helpful.

In my experience, most web forums don't automatically send email notifications, and that is the way I'm used to things being. I keep track of my conversations with bookmarks. That's the way I've done it for decades. (I am a prolific bookmarker and have over 25k bookmarks)

I guess everyone is different, but to me, email is not a bulk notification system, email is for sending and receiving letters between me and my friends. When I get an email, it should be important. If every website I'm a member of kept sending me notifications, my inbox would quickly become chaotic and I would find that unsettling!

So, basically, every time I post a question here I have to manually opt out of email notifications! Shame there's no global control for this, but never mind. It's a good forum! :-)

No - once you have clicked "Stop email updates" you will not get any email notifications when someone has posted in that thread.

When you start a new thread (or post in someone else's thread), then : yes, you will have to click on the button in that thread. But never twice (or more times) in the same thread.

You could use more than one email account - one for "shop talk" and one for friends .....

Aww, you just do what you feel comfortable with.

My pleasure - and : likewise.
