Thunderbird isn't working properly after copying content old profile into new profile, what can I do
My old laptop crashed, but luckily I got the hard drive out, which functions now as an external drive. I installed TB on my new laptop. I copied the content of the old profile file into the new profile file, and started up TB. I do have all my folders in pace, but TB does nog work properly. After login it takes ages to load the new messages, when I go from one message to another, the first respond I get is 'TB does not respond' and after a few minutes I finally arrive at the next message. Same story with 'reply' or with 'delete'. I already tried deleting the index file, and have TB indexing the message folders again, but this did not help.
I did notice that my old profile files seems to have some kind of double files in the Mail subfolder, from older accounts. For instance: pop.tele2.nl, pop.tele2-1.nl, pop.tele2-2.nl. I'm not sure what they are (they seem to hold different versions?) or if this is relevant?
When I search for the AppData/Roaming/Profiles I will find it (on the old and new hard disk alike) but I cannot browse to it (some kin of hidden file?) I did check the rights on the profile files of my account (admin rights). I do not know what to do anymore, so I hope for some help.

re: For instance: pop.tele2.nl, pop.tele2-1.nl, pop.tele2-2.nl. these are mail accounts for the pop mail account. If you have several email addresses on the same server, it will have the same name but an additional eg: -1 added to the name. If you have recovered a mail account, it may also create and add the extra number. Why you have several, I cannot say for certain what caused them without knowing everything you have been doing. The point being you need to have the Local Directory pointing to the one which is correct and has all your current emails.
Profile folders are hidden files. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Show_hidden_files_and_folders

What local directory setting is set for the mail account? 'Tools' > 'Account Settings' > 'Server Settings' for the mail account bottom right under 'Local directory' It will say something like this: C:\Users\User Account name\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\abc12345.default\Mail\pop.tele2.nl
Copy paste the info into this question, so I know which mail account you are currently using.
How many mail accounts do you have listed in the left pane in Account Settings? Do you have just the one pop mail account and local Folders?
What anti-virus software do you use? If you McAfee please read;
How many emails do you have in the Inbox folder? It is advisable to use the Inbox folder as an Inbox for new incoming mail and not as a general storage. Suggest you create some folders and move all emails out of the Inbox into other suitable folders, then right click on Inbox and select 'Compact'.
Good info explaining what Compacting does and why it is important:
It is also a good idea to Archive mail that is older than a couple of months. Set up archiving options to archive by month and keep folder structure. These emails will still be in your profile and visible via 'Archives' folder, but archiving will reduce the size of the folders and therefore use less memory when opening them.
