After installing Win8.1 and getting firefox Netflix no longer works says DRM issues, Id rather not use IE 11 please help?

Recently went from Win 7 to Win 8.1, everything worked AMAZING till I went to Netflix(in firefox id rather not use IE 11, also tried google chrome doesnt work there either). Each time I try to watch something on netflix I get a DRM problem. Ive tried in Chrome as well doesnt work. I understand that Microsoft and Netflix have made the change to HTML5 or something on those lines but in firefox silverlight should still work right? It does in Win 7, so why not in 8.1? Anyways I am wondering if any Firefox Users on Win 8.1 have found a Fix or a Workaround to solve this problem.

In case one of your extensions is involved, could you test Netflix in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using

Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled (Flash and other plugins still run)

In the dialog, click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Reset)

Any difference?

In case your settings restrict Netflix's ability to set cookies or use local storage, you could simulate default settings by opening it in a private window while you're in Firefox's Safe Mode. That should let sites run normally but discard their cookies and local data after you close the private window.

You can open a private browsing window using either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+p
  • File menu > New Private Window
  • orange Firefox button > New Private Window

What's the exact error message? I'd like to search it.

The exact error message is this :

Whoops, something went wrong... Digital Rights Management (DRM) Error To Resolve This Issue, Please Follow the Steps in our Help Center https://help.netflix.com/article/en/node/200 Error Code: N8156-6023

The article it gives didn't change anything in to allow netflix to play stuff. I'm going to give your idea a shot and see if that works.

You can also check the cookie permissions that apply to local storage as well.

You can inspect and manage the permissions for the domain in the currently selected tab via these steps:

  • Click the "Site Identity Button" (globe/padlock) on the location bar
  • Click "More Information" to open "Tools > Page Info" with the Security tab selected
  • Go to the Permissions tab (Tools > Page Info > Permissions) to check the permissions for the domain in the currently selected tab

You can inspect and manage the permissions for all domains on the about:permissions page.

Delete the permissions.sqlite file to reset all permissions.

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Director: Show Folder (Linux: Open Director; Mac: Show in Finder)

See whether you can create exceptions for the relevant Netflix domains (sometimes a site splits its content over multiple domains) in your three extensions:

  • Adblock Plus
  • Flashblock
  • HTTPS Everywhere
