Resetting my homepage on the general tab of options does not fix the problem. The url for the offending web page does not appear in the "use current pages" on the general tab after clicking on options.

I have looked in the user.js and pref.js files in my profile (using notepad) but cannot see anything which looks obvious to delete, from someone that is not very tech savvy that is.

I've tried removing and re-installing downloadhelper but this does n't fix it either. The probelm goes away when I uninstall downloadhelper but I don't want to have to keep uninstalling and re-installing every time I want to download a video.

Can anyone help, thanks?

There may still be a problems with the first pref for that extension, so to move or rename the file prefs.js to see if that helps.

It is possible that there is a problem with the file(s) that store the extensions registry.
Delete the files extensions.* (e.g. extensions.sqlite, extensions.ini, extensions.cache, extensions.rdf) and compatibility.ini in the Firefox profile folder to reset the extensions registry.
New files will be created when required.

See "Corrupt extension files":

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder

If you see disabled, not compatible, extensions in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" then click the Tools button at the left side of the Search Bar (or click the "Find Updates" button in older Firefox versions) to do a compatibility check or see if there is a compatibility update available.

Thanks for your help cor el, sorry for not replying earlier just I have n't had time to to do much with it of late.

I tried renaming the pref.js file but that did n't work, will work through the other suggestions when I've got a free moment and will let you know how I get on.

Speak later.

EDIT

You're a star cor-el, problem solved!

I found a user.js file in my profile folder and once I deleted it and restarted firefox the offending tab/webpage did not re-appear. Apparently the user.js file is created either by the user or sometimes by third party software. As I have never before created a user.js file it appears that the extension "downloadhelper" does, perhaps it should be listed on the mozillazine article?

Thanks again
