When upgraded to FF7 it indicated add-on for Zone Alarm was incompatible. There was an option to check for updates, which I selected. The install found no updates, but did not supply an option to abort the install. Installer completed the install. I will not run without security so downloaded 3.6.23 and installed it. When tried to add add[on any add-on get 302 error. Console Error: e.location.getItemLocation(e.id) is null Source File: file:///C:/Program%20Files/Mozilla%20Firefox/components/nsExtensionManager.js Line: 3533.

Apparently the nsExtensionManager was upgraded an is no longer compatible with 3.6.23

How do I install add-ons now????

At this stage I would uninstall Firefox completely, and reinstall Firefox 7 from scratch, not as an upgrade. Write down the list of add-ons you use. Before you install any add-on, install the "Add-on Compatibility Reporter" add-on from Mozilla. This is an add-on that allows other add-ons to work by bypassing Firefox version compatibility check. Many add-ons are hosted on the Mozilla site and are automatically upgraded during the beta program before the new versions of Firefox are officially released, but there still many odd add-on that come from third-party software and just can't keep up with Firefox new fast development cycle that requires every single add-on to be updated every 8 weeks or so. I am for instance still using the Google Toolbar that is not maintained by Google since Firefox 4.0 and has been abandoned totally in 6.0.

Once the Mozilla add-on has been installed, mark all disabled add-ons in "Compatibility -> This add-on still works" and you should not experience any further problem every time Firefox upgrades.

Of course, there is still the risk that the add-on might break if it was relying on an API that has been modified in a non backwards compatible way, in which case you are stuck with an older version or you need to ask the add-on owner, but this is a very remote risk, as it is likely many other add-ons would be impacted or that Firefox itself would require massive changes, and developers are lazy... ^-^
