How to remove the akamaihd hijacker from firefox

more options

My iMac firefox is infected with akamaihd.... whenever I search for something, the akamaihd site pops up for less than a second before the results load. I have tried to find the extension in the library so that I can delete it (per several online instructions), but there is nothing in the "extensions" folder. I am reluctant to download more software to "clean" my computer for fear of introducing something else. I have McAfee, and it warned me when I got infected... I tried to close the window to stop the installation, but apparently it was too late.

So... now that it is in FireFox, how do I manually remove it?

Can you try the following?

  1. Click the menu button New Fx Menu and choose Add-ons.
  2. In the Add-ons Manager tab, select the Extensions panel.
  3. Select the toolbar you wish to remove.
  4. Click the Remove button.
  5. Click "Restart now" if it pops up. Your tabs will be saved and restored after the restart.

If there's no extensions listed, open the preferences page (menu button > preferences), and choose the "search" tab. Scroll down to the bottom, and choose "restore default search engines".

Hope that helps!

Many companies use Akamai's network for some of their content. So seeing an Akamai server address might not be suspicious depending on the site you're using. Be very, very cautious of sites that want to push clean-up software on you for "problems" that may not really be problems. If you suspect there is an infection, you may also want to supplement McAfee with this well-regarded cleaner: https://www.malwarebytes.com/antimalware/mac/
