Win 10 pro task manager shows phantom tabs, excessive CPU and memory usage
I'm now running in troubleshooting mode with NO extensions.
For weeks my drives have been churning and I've been running out of resource, seeing the hour glass, graying screen, etc.
I finally closed the windows with countless tabs, disabled some extensions, and it got better, but I still have problems, even in troubleshooting mode.
Task manager still shows phantom tabs. I had 4 tabs open, it showed 7, etc.
And strangely, I now see Kaperski Native Messaging with the tabs in task manager: https://www.file.net/process/plugin-nm-server.exe.html
Closed that. Have 7 tabs in one window, task manager shows 11 tabs.
Am so confused.

It is quite normal to see more Firefox processes running.
- process for the main Firefox thread (user interface)
- one or more content processes
you see more content processes when Fission is enabled - process for the compositor thread
- process for extensions
- process for WebRender when this feature is enabled
There are several toolkit.aboutProcesses prefs on the about:config page to show more info. You can find the current multi-process state on the Troubleshooting Information page (about:support).
- "Help -> Troubleshooting Information"
"Application Basics":<be>Multiprocess Windows and Fission Windows
"Remote Processes" (Web Content)
You can check the about:memory and about:processes pages for info about all processes. See also the about:unloads page for info about the tabs.

There is Windows Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) and there is Firefox's internal task manager, the about:processes page (Shfit+Esc).
The process ID numbers should match up between the two (use the Details tab in the Windows Task Manager), which should enable you to account for all the processes. If there are extra processes in the Windows Task Manager, this can indicate a hidden instance of Firefox running.

Thanks!
I had no idea it was about processes and not tabs.
Have to take some time to check all this out.
