I have three computers running firefox 31. I have just installed it onto a pc running windows xp, but cannot find the boolean operator "browser.tabs.onTop" in about:config. I tried making a new boolean operator by right clicking and choosing new/Boolean, but it only created a string operator.

Actually, you already have CTR installed. In its Options dialog there is a control to move the tab bar. You can get to the Options from the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then on the right side, you should find Classic Theme Restorer and its Options button.

Firefox 29 and higher no longer implement that preference. Or to put that another way, Firefox 29 and higher would ignore that preference even if you create it.

To move the tab bar, you can use a custom style rule, or you might find it easier to use an extension such as: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/classicthemerestorer/
