I'm stuck with a "Babylon" version of the "search the web" facility on the toolbar to the right of the address bar. I've searched for access to it but had no success. Can anyone help?

If it is a search engine in the search bar, see the search bar article for details of how to remove a search engine.

If you have the Babylon Toolbar, follow the procedure in the uninstalling add-ons article, in particular the section on uninstalling extensions and themes

This is worse than ANY virus I have ever had and believe you me I have had some!! What is it with this piece of crudishness? SOMEONE must have an answer as to HOW to remove this unworthy piece of not wanted/needed software?? I have even gone to IE to be sure it was not there (It was!) and got rid of it and yet it is still infecting my PC!! And what is worse is as I am in France (I am from the UK so speak English) this crud is even showing FRENCH language searches!! It took me several months to stop Google doing this, but I did! How to do it with out downloading random stuff. If you Firefox( obvious) go to tools and holy crap it there that bastard. Change the homepage and everything.

If you see it in options then it is either added by an extension or via setting preferences.

My problem was Babylon coming up when the url was invalid. On my system, some web site or application apparently set keyword.url in about:config to the babylon site. I changed it to Google and now all is well with the world.

more options

The missing link instructions to perform after completing all the above suggestions are:

Type about:config in the URL bar and press enter twice (there is no warranty that comes with FF) Disregard the warning message.

In the filter area type Babylon and press enter. This will bring up entries associated with this search engine.

FF entries that contain values to babylon and it's url, simply change to your preferred search engine. (these entries will not have babylon in the name.)

Entries that have babylon in the name (any location), right click on the entry and select reset.

Close FF and reopen. Magic, it's gone.

uninstalled the toolbar, but it was still owning my search.

I went to c:\program files\mozilla firefox\searchplugins

I deleted all .xml files with the exception of google.xml - as that is my prefered search engine using "right click" after selecting text.

more options

indeed. uninstalling the toolbar is not enough. you need to open FF >> Go to about:config >> search for 'babylon'. change what ever keys you see with value search.babylon.com with the official mozilla URL: "http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=navclient&gfns=1&q="

more options

YESSS!!! Ok people here's what you do!

1. Type about:config in the bar and hit enter, ignore the funny warning

2. Type Babylon in the search query and hit enter. This will show all Babylon Sh%t in your browser

3. Right click "extensions.BabylonToolbar.firstRun" and select "Toggle"

4. Select keyword.URL (This is the fixed line, yours will have Babylon in it) and "Modify" it and copy/paste this in:

http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=navclient&gfns=1&q="

5. Exit the tab and restart your browser!

6. BINGO it SHOULD be fixed!

Hope this fixes your guys problems! It took me a while to figure out what this thing was doing then remembered about:config!

If you remove the software, reset your homepage and change your search engine, you haven't finished the job.

PROBLEM: If you type something in the address bar...you still end up at BABYLON!!!. I contacted Babylon repeatedly and they absolutely refuse to let you know how to fix this.....but after a couple days of research I finally found out how to do it. HERE IS HOW TO GET YOUR COMPUTER BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1. click into the address bar in Firefox.......Type "about:config"

2. You will get a warning about your warranty.....bypass this.

3. In the next screen....type......"Babylon" in the Filter window (a search in the config)

4. You are now in the guts of Firefox.....and where Babylon did it's dirty work. You will find about 5 or six places where Babylon shows up.

5. Highlight each of these entries one at a time, right click and pick "reset".

6. When all have been reset.....close the file.

Now test:

Open firefox....type something weird into the address bar.as a test...and your browser should start acting normally and faster.....and BABYLON is GONE!by the way, the uninstaller file they tell you to use is identified as TROJAN by McAfee. Sleazy.

By the way, Babylon tries to get you to download an "uninstaller" package:

DO NOT DO IT.....McAfee intercepts it....it contains a TROJAN virus!!!! BEWARE.

Now that I posted my answer, I see that others found the same solution.....great work everyone. THIS SLEAZY COMPANY SHOULD BE DRIVEN FROM BUSINESS......IF THIS IS THEIR MARKETING PLAN, (TAKING OVER YOUR COMPUTER)....THIS IS #$%^&*!!!!!. The company refuses to tell you how to get your computer back.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here was the way I managed "babylon". I call it "The Adventure of Removing Babylon, the Leech - A Horror Story"

You have no idea where it came from, but it is there, and it is there to rob you of your every last nerve - indestructible like a cockroach and clinging like a leech: The babylon toolbar. You never wanted it; you got it anyway - like hundreds of other people, because apparently pissing everyone off is considered great marketing by babylon.

So, first of all, you remove the toolbar, by selecting the toolbar drop down menu and deactivating it. Now you don't see it, but it is still there in the background, and you know it. You can then go to Tools - Add-Ons - Extensions and remove babylon there (in IE there should be also a menu to manage add-ons), but it will still infest your computer like a blood-sucking leech. While you're add it, click the arrow next to the search engine and choose "manage search engines" to be sure babylon is removed from there, too.

Now you definitely don't have to see it anymore... you thought...

In fact, it will jump up when you open your browsers, because it made itself the start page and didn't bother to change it back when you kicked it off your browser. So you have to return the start page to google or whatever else you prefer. In firefox, you do this via Tools - Options - Home Page, in IE via the little house symbol at the top (or rather, the arrow next to it). The default firefox start page is http://en-us.start3.mozilla.com/firefox?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official

Just to be sure you got rid of this leech, you can go to your System Tray, check the programs and software installations and remove Babylon (or myBabylon), then clean your recycle bin. After that, because you're likely still paranoid or having babylon nightmare or something, you go search your entire computer, including the hidden files for "Babylon" and delete whatever your find - cue emptying the recycle bin. I, for example, found a folder in my files under AppData/LocalLow (Windows Vista).

Since you're frustrated as hell by this point and did - seemingly - everything in your power to remove the source of your anger, you might feel yourself safe. That is, until you enter a random search term into the URL bar of firefox which USED to bring you to google or some other desired page and now brings you to an ugly babylon-google hybrid. Babylon is like a zombie, really.

Okay, so babylon EVEN infested your URL.keyword search. You have no choice but to go to about:config (you'll get a warning to not do that) and search for "search". The entry "keyword.URL" will say something about babylon in the "value" column. It used to just send you via the "I'm Feeling Lucky" google search, but babylon changed it. Change that back to "http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=navclient&gfns=1&q=" by right-clicking the row and selecting "modify". Then you make sure the default search engine is set to "Google" or whatever you prefer to search with.

You might be tempted to also search for "babylon" and yepp, you will STILL find some entries. Sadly, every splashed cockroach or leech will leave a stain. But if anyone has some great detergent or some acid for this, let me know!

ok guys i found a solution thats bulletproof. all you have to do is go here: https://www.google.com/intl/en/toolbar/ff/index.html and install the google toolbar for firefox and SET google as your default search engine and THATS IT!!!! after you have done that, you could remove or keep the google toolbar add on !!! SIMPLE =DDD
