I have seen web sites try to get my zip code, credit card number, phone number, etc. by probing my computer and without a visible request. A security program I use blocks this but unfortunately does not work on sites using https://. Some web sites briefly switch me to a secure connection, attack me, then switch back to the regular connection.

Is there a way to block all secure connections, as I can in Internet Explorer, that is easily engaged and disengaged?

hi, you should update your firefox version and your plugins. on a fully patched system, websites won't have access to all that information (except for the zip code - this could be guessed by the ip address that gets assigned to you by the provider in many cases): Update Firefox to the latest release https://www.mozilla.org/plugincheck/

sorry, this adviced based on the data that was submitted from the pc that you have posted your question from (that was firefox 37 on win7). if you are already up to date, then this doesn't apply anymore. in regards to plugins the general advice would probably be to use as little as you require (that will probably be flash on some sites), you can set all other plugins to "never activate" in the firefox menu > addons > plugins.

Your first line of defense is an up to date operating system. Win XP is beyond EOL - End Of Life as of April 2014.

I don't know where you came up with those ideas about HTTPS, but that information is basically backwards from the reality of what it does. Overall, my guess is that you have something nefarious on that PC which is causing your consternation about "probing".
