How to lengthen email/URL preview in bottom taskbar

I recently upgraded my OS from Ubuntu 10 to Ubuntu 11. With this upgrade, Firefox was upgraded to version 12. Previously, if I held my cursor over a link, the URL of the link, or the email address that the link contained, would be previewed in the bottom taskbar. In version 12, the taskbar is absent, and the preview appears in a small box in the bottom left corner of the window. If the link's destination is too long, the middle part of the URL or email address will be replaced with an ellipsis, something that was not done in previous versions of Firefox. This is incredibly tedious, as if I want to read a long link or email field, I have to click on it and wait for my email client to bring up a new message. I've searched through the program's settings, and cannot find a way to enlarge the preview so that it displays the entire email field. Is there any way to do this?
