Interference with Thunderbird by Bitdefender antivirus program - a warning and advice
This is not really a question but rather a warning and advice for anyone using Thunderbird and Bitdefender antivirus software. I use Thunderbird to bring in my email from Gmail (what I am about to say might also apply to other IMAP email programs). I had no problems until my email file on my PC grew to about 4.5 gigabytes. At that time, there was interference which really hobbled me. I posted a question about this, thinking that the problem was in Thunderbird. Two people answered, each saying that they suspected my antivirus program. I was skeptical but they were right.
I knew that for some reason, BItdefender set my profile too "Game". I ignored this. What I decided to do was to change the profile to "Work". The problem cleared up immediately. Problem solved. I will take this up with Bitdefender but in the meantime, my advice to anyone using Thunderbird and Bitdefender is to set the profile to "Work" to avoid email problems.

I don't understand where these profile names are coming from, Game and Work.
I apologize if I was not clear. My message only applies to Thunderbird users who have Bitdefender as their antivirus software. All others should ignore my post. Work and Game apply to Bitdefender only and not to Thunderbird. If you have Bitdefender, look at the Profile to see these settings. There is a profound negative affect on Thunderbird if the Profile in Bitdefender is set to Game and you use Gmail (or, I suspect, other IMAP protocol systems). I do not know if the Bitdefender "Movie" profile is problematic as well. I would be careful about using the "Standard" profile, but for other reasons.
This posting is not a question. It is simply information for a subset of Thunderbird users.
I think this will clarify Wayne http://www.bitdefender.com.au/support/what-are-the-bitdefender-profiles-and-how-do-they-work-1297.html
